* I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
When I first realized that the author of this book and the narrator were one and the same I was unsure whether it would be an enjoyable listening experience. While there is usually something to be said for hiring a professional to narrate a book, in this case the decision to forgo using a voice actor was a brilliant one.
Patrick E McLean knew exactly how he envisioned the voices of his characters and even had differing accents for each one. I usually find that male narrators do not do the best job when voicing female characters but Patrick McLean is the exception.
The fact is that this book is a tongue-in-cheek parody of the often predictable fantasy genre. The main character is a greedy merchant who cares about almost nothing except for money. However, he is secretly in love with the woman who runs the local inn.
When his town is ransacked and the woman he loves is taken by an evil wizard, the merchant must leave the safety of his trading post and travel to rescue her.
He is an unlikely hero and readers will love him not despite his flaws, but because of them.
His ideas of how to “rescue” his love are definitely unique and there are quite a few occasions where the listener will literally laugh out loud.
I rate this audiobook as 4 out of 5 stars and I definitely recommend it to all those who read fantasy and/or those who want a good chuckle.
