I love the cover of this book. The cartoon drawing is perfect for this humorous story.
Hubert was not a popular guy. His best friend was always coming up with new schemes to boost both his and Hubert’s popularity.
The food court at the local mall is where all the teenagers seem to hang out, so Will gets an idea. He and Hubert will apply to work there and all the girls will want to be with them.
As usual, something goes wrong with Will’s plan and only Hubert ends up getting hired.
Somehow a picture is taken in the work locker room with all the male staff standing naked, including Hubert whose boxers had been pulled down by someone at the last second. That photo (of course) ends up on Facebook.
All the guys in the photo are circumcised, except Hubert.
When the picture goes viral, all of the sudden everyone wants an up close and personal look at this rare uncircumcised penis. But Hubert never wanted popularity, he just wanted to fade into the background.
Meanwhile, Hubert’s mother is way too interested in Hubert’s nightly wet dreams and after catching Hubert’s father in a compromising position, she insists that Hubert be circumcised.
Imagine being circumcises at seventeen. Yikes! Poor Hubert!
But, the surgery itself isn’t the only issue. Hubert has decided that he wants to maintain his newfound popularity. But, to do that he will need to hide the fact that he has been CIRCUMCISED AT SEVENTEEN.
This book is a light-hearted look at the absurdity of teenage popularity and the ridiculous influence that social media has on teenagers in today’s society.
Social media has changed the way teenagers interact with the world around them. Now, everyone posts pictures of everything they do and an entire high-school full of teenagers can view those pictures within minutes.
I LOVED IT!
I have teenage sons and this book was obviously written by someone who has teenagers of their own. It is ridiculous what becomes popular and why. This book also highlights how quickly trends can change. One “cool” or “popular” guy wears a specific kind of hat and suddenly everyone has to have one too. This is obviously ridiculous because within days, weeks, or sometimes even hours, these trends are replaced by new ones.
But, this is also a story with a moral. Basically, that moral is to be true to yourself and proud of your own individuality. You don’t need to change just to fit in. You just need a bit of confidence in yourself to get the girl (or the guy as the case may be).
Brian Robert Smith’s past two books were well-written thrillers, so I was unsure how he would do when writing a comedy, but I need not have worried. CIRCUMCISED AT SEVENTEEN is a great book and will appeal to a large audience.
I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love the absurdity of someone achieving popularity just because he has an uncircumcised penis in a world full of circumcised ones.
