Max is just an ordinary guy trying to navigate the government rules in post-apocalyptic New Chicago.
He has a wife at home who resents him and his second wife was sent back for reassignment when he failed (by only a single point) to meet the new government genetic standards. He wouldn’t really care, but the government mandated that every man must maintain dual wives.
Waiting in line at the “Marriage Reissue” kiosk proves that even the apocalypse can’t fix government office waiting times.
The one true love of Max’s life is his vintage Alpha-Romeo hovercraft. He cares more about that car than he ever has about either of his two wives.
When he receives a holographic message from the car stating that his parking meter has expired, he is torn. He is next in line and the kiosk will close right after his turn, but if he doesn’t feed the meter his car might be towed.
A seemingly small decision – whether to stay in line or to go feed the meter – has consequences he could never have anticipated.
What follows is a high-speed, action packed tale that goes from zero to 200 in the blink of an eye. Readers will not want to put this book down.
Conan De Moe’s world-building is absolutely fantastic. Despite the story’s short length, the reader never feels cheated when it comes to learning about what the world is like in New Chicago in the year 2225.
This novella is “Turbo Fiction” which means that it is short in length, but long in story. The technology included in this story is particularly exemplary.
I rate this story as 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
