THE CHEMIST by Stephenie Meyer is a riveting page-turner that solidifies her debut as a Thriller author

Title: THE CHEMIST

Genre: FICTION, THRILLER

Length: 518 PAGES

Publisher: LITTLE, BROWN AND COMPANY
Release Date: NOVEMBER 8, 2016

Rating: 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Stephenie Meyer became famous as the author of the TWILIGHT SERIES of Young Adult books wherein a regular teenage girl meets a guy and falls in love. She learns that the love of her life is actually a vampire, but that’s okay because he is a “good” vampire. Anyone who has not read the Twilight books or who has not at least seen the movies made based on the books must have been living under a rock for the past decade.

After writing that series, she then penned the Young Adult science fiction novel – THE HOST which also became a movie. So, potential readers of THE CHEMIST can be forgiven if, at first, they expect this latest book to be another work of Young Adult Fiction.

However, after reading the first few pages of THE CHEMIST, it became  readily apparent that this book was written for an adult audience.

Alex (not her real name) is on the run from her former employer – a shadowy, secret arm of the U.S. government – and has been running for the past three years. She doesn’t know what led to them trying to kill her, but somehow she went from prized asset to liability.

Her existence now consists of little more than trying to find a way to keep breathing for one more day.

She had been known as “The Chemist” and her skills at creating concoctions to help speed along interrogations of terrorist subjects was unsurpassed. But, actual field missions and the art of subterfuge were never part of her job.

So, when she receives an email from her former handler telling her that she is needed and that if she completes one last job for him, they will stop hunting her, she is cautiously optimistic. She knows it is likely a trap, but she is so tired of running that she agrees.

What she had thought would be a routine interrogation quickly becomes anything but.

The information she learns makes her an even bigger threat than she was previously,

Complicating matters even further she starts to fall for a man shè shouldn’t. She knows that the only chance of her ever having anything resembling a normal life will require her to go even deeper down the rabbit hole and to do things she had never believed herself capable of.

This book is so fast paced that readers become so swept up in the story that the everyday world falls away.

Stephenie has created characters so believable and so compelling that readers will be outraged with the treatment they receive from the very country they love.

This book has no sickeningly sweet (and therefore wholeheartedly unbelievable)love scenes that were so common in the TWILIGHT series. That series was written by a much younger Stephenie Meyer. With THE CHEMIST she proves that she has grown up.  Stephenie dominated the Young Adult literary world for years. THE CHEMIST proves that she is ready to do the same with Adult Fiction.

Thoroughly researched and exceptionally well plotted, THE CHEMIST takes readers on a heart-pounding roller coaster ride that has so many twists and turns that 518 pages literally fly by.  #TheChemist

I heartily endorse this book and give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The only negative I can see is that readers who had hoped that Stephenie Meyer had stayed stagnant, who hoped that she would remain a YA author forever may find themselves disappointed to discover that #StephenieMeyer has grown up and so has her writing.

MANAGING BUBBIE by Russell Lageza is a most unique memoir of “typical Jewish grandmother.”  Filled with moments of hilarity and others of poignancy. 5 STARS

Title: MANAGING BUBBIE

Author: RUSSEL LAZEGA

Type of Book: EBOOK

Genre: MEMOIR, BIOGRAPHY

Length: 245 PAGES

Publisher: CREATE SPACE

Release Date: FEBRUARY 5, 2016

ISBN: 9781499126297

Price: $12.95 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

When you think of biographies or memoirs you tend to think of fairly dry reading with sporadic moments of interest. Not so with MANAGING BUBBIE. In addition, there are plenty of books written by, or about,  Holocaust survivors, but none of them are quite like this.

Author Russel Lazega’s “Bubbie” (Grandmother) is one h*ll of a character or maybe even a caricature. In fact, Russel describes her by saying: “She’s a page right out of a Neil Simon play, my grandmother, a true Miami Beach Jewish bubbie. Silver hair, tortoise-shell glasses two sizes too big, and that unmistakable Yiddish accent, ‘I vant you should make this book. You’ll be my storyteller, my manager. You’re a smart boy, Russel. A million dollars they’ll pay you for this book! I know from these tings – I’m no dumb bubbie.'”

How can you resist finding out more. I couldn’t. However, in case you think this memoir is one containing only humorous anecdotes, think again.

What is so incredibly unique about this book is that the narrative follows Bubbie’s life during two very different timespans.

One timeline told in detail is Bubbie’s life right now. Where she is a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.

The second narrative tells of her escape from Germany and the Nazis. As well as her quest to reach the promised land of the USA. Author (and Bubbie’s Grandson) Russel Lazega says “…she recalls those days with sadness, [but] strangely there’s really not a hint of bitterness. It’s more like a glowing sense of accomplishment – like deep down she’s quelled by the knowledge that survival is sweet satisfaction.”

This book has its share of emotional and harrowing moments, but it also has lots of comedy and happy moments. My favorite line in this book is:

“AT SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD, SHE SEES MORE DOCTORS THAN A JEWISH WIDOW ON THE HUNT FOR A HUSBAND.”

I rate this true memoir as 5 out of 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

THE CREEPING by Alexandra Sirowy will have you checking behind you in fright.

Title: THE CREEPING

Author:ALEXANDRA SIROWY

Genre: YOUNG ADULT FICTION, HORROR

Length: 400 PAGES

Publisher: SIMON AND SCHUSTER

Release Date: 2015

ISBN: 9781481418874

Price: $9.99 USD (PAPERBACK)

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

“>

The fact that THE CREEPING is Alexandra Sirowy’s debut novel is astounding. Not only is it creepy and cool, but it also contains characters who are so believable that, at times, readers will wonder if this is actually fiction.

Twelve years earlier Jeanie and Stella were playing near the woods close to home when something really bad happened. Stella came back, Jeannie never did.

Now Stella’s seventeen and looking forward to her last year of high school. Sure, she may not have any memories of what happened to her on that long ago day and sure, maybe sometimes she wonders if it was somehow her fault, but summer is here. And Stella and her best friend plan to have the best summer ever.

Unfortunately, it seems that fate has other plans for Stella.

When the body of a little redheaded girl – who looks an awful lot like Jeannie – turns up, Stella’s memories begin to come back.

Has an ancient evil reawakened? And if so, is it angry at Stella? And why kill red-haired little girls?

Something or someone took Jeannie, and now that it knows Stella’s memory is returning,  will she be it’s next victim?

THE CREEPING is an apt name for this novel because it registers highly on the creepiness metre. With 100÷ believable characters, a town that has seen much more than its fair share of tragedies, and a mystery that must be solved before anyone else dies, THE CREEPING will grab you by the hair, drag you off into the bushes and will only release you once you reach the final page. Even then, this book will stay with you.

This book is filed as Young Adult Fiction which is fine in my opinion, however, I recommend it only for readers ages 13+ due to violence and sexually suggestive situations.

If you like to feel the hair on the back of your neck rise from fright, this is the book for you.

I can’t wait to read her next book: THE TELLING.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A Declaration in Support of Children

faceofhope Illustration by Vanessa Brantley-Newton

Children’s literature may be the most influential literary genre of all. Picture books, chapter books, middle-grade and young-adult novels all serve the most noble of purposes: to satisfy the need for information, to entertain curious imaginations, to encourage critical thinking skills, to move and inspire. Within their pages, seeds of wisdom and possibility are sown.

Therefore we, the undersigned children’s book authors and illustrators, do publicly affirm our commitment to using our talents and varied forms of artistic expression to help eliminate the fear that takes root in the human heart amid lack of familiarity and understanding of others; the type of fear that feeds stereotypes, bitterness, racism and hatred; the type of fear that so often leads to tragic violence and senseless death.

Our country is deeply divided. The recent election is a clear indication of the bigotry that is entrenched in this nation, of…

SCHIZO by Kim Firmston offers a glimpse into the life of a teen whose mother is mentally ill

Title: SCHIZO

Author: KIM FIRMSTON

Genre: YOUNG ADULT FICTION, MENTAL HEALTH, BULLYING

Length: 150 PAGES

Publisher: LORIMER

Release Date: SEPTEMBER 2011

ISBN: 978-1-55277-871-5

Price: $9.95 CDN

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dan and his little brother Dustin live in a single-parent household. Dan is a fifteen year old boy who is just trying to live his life. He has all the normal teenage concerns and desires. There is a girl he really likes and his favourite thing to do is to play his base guitar.

BUT there is one thing that distinguishes him from the rest of the kids at his high school and it is so time-consuming and so emotionally draining that he is exhausted and sleep-deprived every single day. This is obviously affecting his grades.

The difference between Dan and his friends is his mother. She isn’t like the mothers that his friends complain about. They all think their mothers are psycho and  complain about them bitterly. If they only knew!

They may call their mothers “psycho” but they have no idea what life is actually like with a mentally ill mother.

Dan’s mother is a schizophrenic and she has recently stopped taking her medication. This makes her unpredictable and can lead to her becoming violent.

Dan feels powerless and as if he is all alone in the world:

“I wonder, sometimes, if anyone else has a life like mine. I’ve never heard of it. Not once.”

Dan is doing his best to hold his family together and to protect his brother. But soon things begin to spiral out of control. Will Dan be able to keep himself and his brother safe? Or is his mother’s schizophrenia going to tear the family apart?

WHEW!!! What a book. I started reading and couldn’t stop. I read the entire book in a single sitting.

Author Kim Firmston should be applauded for writing a book that directly tackles the issue of mental illness. Unfortunately, even though we are making progress in bringing the issue of mental health out of the shadows, there is still a long way to go.

In the story Dan is tormented by a bully who often says: “…You’re a schizo-nutbar. Like your schizo mom.”

Dan replies by saying: “Don’t call my Mom that. She’s sick. You wouldn’t call someone with cancer names, would you?”

Dan makes a great point. Schizophrenia is an illness, and until people start to believe that, things will not really change. Talking about it and having books like this one available is an important step towards understanding.

According to Dan, “…mental illness isn’t just something you announce. People think it rubs off.”

As ridiculous as it seems to those of us who are aware that mental illness is NOT a choice, there is still a large segment of the population that believes that everyone can choose how they act and react. This needs to change.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I highly recommend it to teens and other young adult readers. It is especially important that books like this are available in all high school libraries so that they are easily accessible to those who need them.

If this book reaches just a single young adult and makes him or her feel less alone then it has done its job.

Thank you to Canadian author Kim Firmston for providing me with a free copy of this book.

The absolutely hilarious book I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT is a MUST READ for anyone who needs a bright spot in their day.

Title:I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT

Subtitle: AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF BIG THOUGHTS FROM LITTLE KIDS

Author: MARTIN BRUCKNER

Genre: HUMOR, COMICS

Length: 224 PAGES

Publisher: WORKMAN PUBLISHING COMPANY

Release Date: APRIL 4, 2017

ISBN: 978-0-7611-8914-5

Price: $12.95 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Absolutely gut-bustingly hilarious.

I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT is a collection of sayings and phrases that have come from the mouths of children.

If you are a parent or even if you aren’t, but have spent any amount of time around small children, then you are aware that sometimes kids say things that make you laugh. These sayings and phrases can be incredibly entertaining. At other times, kids say things that are so incredibly perceptive that listeners find themselves completely dumbfounded at what they hear.

Illustrator Martin Bruckner found himself amused quite often by the things his daughter said. He decided to illustrate some of her more humorous quotes and to put them together in book form as a Mother’s Day present for his wife.

That Mother’s Day present has since changed his life and launched a new brand. He now accepts orders from other people who wish to have their own children’s sayings illustrated as well as including some of them in this book.

Humor books are too often short and can sometimes be comprised of less than 100 pages. I was happy to find that this book is much more substantial, having 224 pages of quotes and illustrations.

Some of my favorite quotes are:

“Volcanoes are the Earth’s butt. That’s how the Earth gets the gas out.”

“I’m not done being bad yet.”

“I can’t have milk. I’m black toast and tolerant.”

And

“My dinner tummy is full, but my dessert tummy is waiting.”

But, it is not just the quotes that make this book so funny, it is also the accompanying illustrations that take the quotes to new heights of laughability.

So, if you need a good chuckle, or if you need a gift for an upcoming event, or if you just want to put a smile on someone’s face, buy this book. Anyone who does not find at least a few of the included illustrations and quotes to laugh it just isn’t human.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
