THE CHEMIST by Stephenie Meyer is a riveting page-turner that solidifies her debut as a Thriller authorย

Title: THE CHEMIST

Author: STEPHENIE MEYER

Genre: FICTION, THRILLER

Length: 518 PAGES

Publisher: LITTLE, BROWN AND COMPANY
Release Date: NOVEMBER 8, 2016

ISBN: 978-0-316-38783-5

Price: $36.50 CDN (HARDCOVER)

Rating: 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Stephenie Meyer became famous as the author of the TWILIGHT SERIES of Young Adult books wherein a regular teenage girl meets a guy and falls in love. She learns that the love of her life is actually a vampire, but that’s okay because he is a “good” vampire. Anyone who has not read the Twilight books or who has not at least seen the movies made based on the books must have been living under a rock for the past decade.

After writing that series, she then penned the Young Adult science fiction novel – THE HOST which also became a movie. So, potential readers of THE CHEMIST can be forgiven if, at first, they expect this latest book to be another work of Young Adult Fiction.

However, after reading the first few pages of THE CHEMIST, it became  readily apparent that this book was written for an adult audience.

Alex (not her real name) is on the run from her former employer – a shadowy, secret arm of the U.S. government – and has been running for the past three years. She doesn’t know what led to them trying to kill her, but somehow she went from prized asset to liability.

Her existence now consists of little more than trying to find a way to keep breathing for one more day.

She had been known as “The Chemist” and her skills at creating concoctions to help speed along interrogations of terrorist subjects was unsurpassed. But, actual field missions and the art of subterfuge were never part of her job.

So, when she receives an email from her former handler telling her that she is needed and that if she completes one last job for him, they will stop hunting her, she is cautiously optimistic. She knows it is likely a trap, but she is so tired of running that she agrees.

What she had thought would be a routine interrogation quickly becomes anything but.

The information she learns makes her an even bigger threat than she was previously,

Complicating matters even further she starts to fall for a man shรจ shouldn’t. She knows that the only chance of her ever having anything resembling a normal life will require her to go even deeper down the rabbit hole and to do things she had never believed herself capable of.

This book is so fast paced that readers become so swept up in the story that the everyday world falls away.

Stephenie has created characters so believable and so compelling that readers will be outraged with the treatment they receive from the very country they love.

This book has no sickeningly sweet (and therefore wholeheartedly unbelievable)love scenes that were so common in the TWILIGHT series. That series was written by a much younger Stephenie Meyer. With THE CHEMIST she proves that she has grown up.  Stephenie dominated the Young Adult literary world for years. THE CHEMIST proves that she is ready to do the same with Adult Fiction.

Thoroughly researched and exceptionally well plotted, THE CHEMIST takes readers on a heart-pounding roller coaster ride that has so many twists and turns that 518 pages literally fly by.  #TheChemist

I heartily endorse this book and give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

The only negative I can see is that readers who had hoped that Stephenie Meyer had stayed stagnant, who hoped that she would remain a YA author forever may find themselves disappointed to discover that #StephenieMeyer has grown up and so has her writing.

MANAGING BUBBIE by Russell Lageza is a most unique memoir of “typical Jewish grandmother.” ย Filled with moments of hilarity and others of poignancy. 5 STARSย

Title: MANAGING BUBBIE

Author: RUSSEL LAZEGA

Type of Book: EBOOK

Genre: MEMOIR, BIOGRAPHY

Length: 245 PAGES

Publisher: CREATE SPACE

Release Date: FEBRUARY 5, 2016

ISBN: 9781499126297

Price: $12.95 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

When you think of biographies or memoirs you tend to think of fairly dry reading with sporadic moments of interest. Not so with MANAGING BUBBIE. In addition, there are plenty of books written by, or about,  Holocaust survivors, but none of them are quite like this.

Author Russel Lazega’s “Bubbie” (Grandmother) is one h*ll of a character or maybe even a caricature. In fact, Russel describes her by saying: “She’s a page right out of a Neil Simon play, my grandmother, a true Miami Beach Jewish bubbie. Silver hair, tortoise-shell glasses two sizes too big, and that unmistakable Yiddish accent, ‘I vant you should make this book. You’ll be my storyteller, my manager. You’re a smart boy, Russel. A million dollars they’ll pay you for this book! I know from these tings – I’m no dumb bubbie.'”

How can you resist finding out more. I couldn’t. However, in case you think this memoir is one containing only humorous anecdotes, think again.

What is so incredibly unique about this book is that the narrative follows Bubbie’s life during two very different timespans.

One timeline told in detail is Bubbie’s life right now. Where she is a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.

The second narrative tells of her escape from Germany and the Nazis. As well as her quest to reach the promised land of the USA. Author (and Bubbie’s Grandson) Russel Lazega says “…she recalls those days with sadness, [but] strangely there’s really not a hint of bitterness. It’s more like a glowing sense of accomplishment – like deep down she’s quelled by the knowledge that survival is sweet satisfaction.”

This book has its share of emotional and harrowing moments, but it also has lots of comedy and happy moments. My favorite line in this book is:

“AT SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD, SHE SEES MORE DOCTORS THAN A JEWISH WIDOW ON THE HUNT FOR A HUSBAND.”

I rate this true memoir as 5 out of 5 Stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

THE CREEPING by Alexandra Sirowy will have you checking behind you in fright.ย

Title: THE CREEPING

Author:ALEXANDRA SIROWY

Genre: YOUNG ADULT FICTION, HORROR

Length: 400 PAGES

Publisher: SIMON AND SCHUSTER

Release Date: 2015

ISBN: 9781481418874

Price: $9.99 USD (PAPERBACK)

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

“>

The fact that THE CREEPING is Alexandra Sirowy’s debut novel is astounding. Not only is it creepy and cool, but it also contains characters who are so believable that, at times, readers will wonder if this is actually fiction.

Twelve years earlier Jeanie and Stella were playing near the woods close to home when something really bad happened. Stella came back, Jeannie never did.

Now Stella’s seventeen and looking forward to her last year of high school. Sure, she may not have any memories of what happened to her on that long ago day and sure, maybe sometimes she wonders if it was somehow her fault, but summer is here. And Stella and her best friend plan to have the best summer ever.

Unfortunately, it seems that fate has other plans for Stella.

When the body of a little redheaded girl – who looks an awful lot like Jeannie – turns up, Stella’s memories begin to come back.

Has an ancient evil reawakened? And if so, is it angry at Stella? And why kill red-haired little girls?

Something or someone took Jeannie, and now that it knows Stella’s memory is returning,  will she be it’s next victim?

THE CREEPING is an apt name for this novel because it registers highly on the creepiness metre. With 100รท believable characters, a town that has seen much more than its fair share of tragedies, and a mystery that must be solved before anyone else dies, THE CREEPING will grab you by the hair, drag you off into the bushes and will only release you once you reach the final page. Even then, this book will stay with you.

This book is filed as Young Adult Fiction which is fine in my opinion, however, I recommend it only for readers ages 13+ due to violence and sexually suggestive situations.

If you like to feel the hair on the back of your neck rise from fright, this is the book for you.

I can’t wait to read her next book: THE TELLING.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars.๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

A Declaration in Support of Children

faceofhope Illustration by Vanessa Brantley-Newton

Childrenโ€™s literature may be the most influential literary genre of all. Picture books, chapter books, middle-grade and young-adult novels all serve the most noble of purposes: to satisfy the need for information, to entertain curious imaginations, to encourage critical thinking skills, to move and inspire. Within their pages, seeds of wisdom and possibility are sown.

Therefore we, the undersigned childrenโ€™s book authors and illustrators, do publicly affirm our commitment to using our talents and varied forms of artistic expression to help eliminate the fear that takes root in the human heart amid lack of familiarity and understanding of others; the type of fear that feeds stereotypes, bitterness, racism and hatred; the type of fear that so often leads to tragic violence and senseless death.

Our country is deeply divided. The recent election is a clear indication of the bigotry that is entrenched in this nation, ofโ€ฆ

SCHIZO by Kim Firmston offers a glimpse into the life of a teen whose mother is mentally illย

Title: SCHIZO

Author: KIM FIRMSTON

Genre: YOUNG ADULT FICTION, MENTAL HEALTH, BULLYING

Length: 150 PAGES

Publisher: LORIMER

Release Date: SEPTEMBER 2011

ISBN: 978-1-55277-871-5

Price: $9.95 CDN

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Dan and his little brother Dustin live in a single-parent household. Dan is a fifteen year old boy who is just trying to live his life. He has all the normal teenage concerns and desires. There is a girl he really likes and his favourite thing to do is to play his base guitar.

BUT there is one thing that distinguishes him from the rest of the kids at his high school and it is so time-consuming and so emotionally draining that he is exhausted and sleep-deprived every single day. This is obviously affecting his grades.

The difference between Dan and his friends is his mother. She isnโ€™t like the mothers that his friends complain about. They all think their mothers are psycho and  complain about them bitterly. If they only knew!

They may call their mothers “psycho” but they have no idea what life is actually like with a mentally ill mother.

Dan’s mother is a schizophrenic and she has recently stopped taking her medication. This makes her unpredictable and can lead to her becoming violent.

Dan feels powerless and as if he is all alone in the world:

“I wonder, sometimes, if anyone else has a life like mine. I’ve never heard of it. Not once.”

Dan is doing his best to hold his family together and to protect his brother. But soon things begin to spiral out of control. Will Dan be able to keep himself and his brother safe? Or is his mother’s schizophrenia going to tear the family apart?

WHEW!!! What a book. I started reading and couldn’t stop. I read the entire book in a single sitting.

Author Kim Firmston should be applauded for writing a book that directly tackles the issue of mental illness. Unfortunately, even though we are making progress in bringing the issue of mental health out of the shadows, there is still a long way to go.

In the story Dan is tormented by a bully who often says: “…You’re a schizo-nutbar. Like your schizo mom.”

Dan replies by saying: “Don’t call my Mom that. She’s sick. You wouldn’t call someone with cancer names, would you?”

Dan makes a great point. Schizophrenia is an illness, and until people start to believe that, things will not really change. Talking about it and having books like this one available is an important step towards understanding.

According to Dan, “…mental illness isn’t just something you announce. People think it rubs off.”

As ridiculous as it seems to those of us who are aware that mental illness is NOT a choice, there is still a large segment of the population that believes that everyone can choose how they act and react. This needs to change.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

I highly recommend it to teens and other young adult readers. It is especially important that books like this are available in all high school libraries so that they are easily accessible to those who need them.

If this book reaches just a single young adult and makes him or her feel less alone then it has done its job.

Thank you to Canadian author Kim Firmston for providing me with a free copy of this book.

The absolutely hilarious book I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT is a MUST READ for anyone who needs a bright spot in their day.

Title:I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT

Subtitle: AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF BIG THOUGHTS FROM LITTLE KIDS

Author: MARTIN BRUCKNER

Genre: HUMOR, COMICS

Length: 224 PAGES

Publisher: WORKMAN PUBLISHING COMPANY

Release Date: APRIL 4, 2017

ISBN: 978-0-7611-8914-5

Price: $12.95 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Absolutely gut-bustingly hilarious.

I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY BUTT is a collection of sayings and phrases that have come from the mouths of children.

If you are a parent or even if you aren’t, but have spent any amount of time around small children, then you are aware that sometimes kids say things that make you laugh. These sayings and phrases can be incredibly entertaining. At other times, kids say things that are so incredibly perceptive that listeners find themselves completely dumbfounded at what they hear.

Illustrator Martin Bruckner found himself amused quite often by the things his daughter said. He decided to illustrate some of her more humorous quotes and to put them together in book form as a Mother’s Day present for his wife.

That Mother’s Day present has since changed his life and launched a new brand. He now accepts orders from other people who wish to have their own children’s sayings illustrated as well as including some of them in this book.

Humor books are too often short and can sometimes be comprised of less than 100 pages. I was happy to find that this book is much more substantial, having 224 pages of quotes and illustrations.

Some of my favorite quotes are:

“Volcanoes are the Earth’s butt. That’s how the Earth gets the gas out.”

“I’m not done being bad yet.”

“I can’t have milk. I’m black toast and tolerant.”

And

“My dinner tummy is full, but my dessert tummy is waiting.”

But, it is not just the quotes that make this book so funny, it is also the accompanying illustrations that take the quotes to new heights of laughability.

So, if you need a good chuckle, or if you need a gift for an upcoming event, or if you just want to put a smile on someone’s face, buy this book. Anyone who does not find at least a few of the included illustrations and quotes to laugh it just isn’t human.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Sometimes it works out for the better when you first discover a new book series that already has a couple books available to read right away. It cuts down on all the angst of waiting for the next book. Such is the case with a series that I only discovered yesterday. The series I am talking about is the TWO MOONS OF SERA Series. To add to the excitement of discovering an talented author that I had not known about, if you visit her website and sign up for her newsletter, she will send a free copy of the prequel to the series: TWO MOONS OF SERA.

MOON DUST introduces readers to an entirely new world which is populated by two vastly different races.

The main character of this story is Nilafay. She is a Sualwet. The Sulawets live beneath the ocean, most of them residing in the Domed City. They have completely hairless bodies and webbed toes (both of which ensure that they are excellent and elegant swimmers.) They have a regulated society that is despotic and there are very clear class divisions.

The other race that inhabits this amazing world are the Erdlanders. This race is the one that seems to most closely resemble humans. They live on the land and have hair on their heads and most of the men have beards. Because the story mostly focuses on Nilafay, we do not learn as muรงh about the Erdlanders as we do about the Sualwet.

As seems to happen when two very different races do not attempt to understand each other, they go to war. In fact, the war has been going on for a long time.

On the morning of her much anticipated wedding, Nilafay makes a decision that will not only change her life, but also the lives of both species. Little does she know that her impulsive decision will have consequences far beyond what she could ever have imagined.

I was fascinated by the world that P.K. Tyler has created. She has done a great job of world building and in generating interest in the MOON OF SERA series. I plan to read more and I cannot imagine that anyone reading it would not want to read on and find out what happens next.

This  novella is well written with vivid characters and a well thought out plot. I rate it as 4 out of 5 Stars ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book through her newsletter. I am now officially a fan.

Playwright Lynn Snyder had decided to give up looking for love. In fact, she even briefly contemplated moving far away from San Francisco to live out the rest of her life on the edges of the High Sierra mountain range.

Thankfully she realized that idea would be taking things a bit too far.

Not long after making this monumental life decision, she heard an announcement on her favorite classical music radio station regarding personal ads for meeting people with the same interests (this was many years before the invention of online dating.) Lynn decided she wouldn’t mind meeting new people and answered an ad that interested her.

It was the best decision she had ever made. It was how she met and fell in love with Leo, which led to them having twenty years together.

I expected this book to be a chronicle of their lives together and nothing more, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that while it was what I expected, it was also so much more.

Leo is eventually diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease and at this point in the story it could have taken a dramatic and sad turn. The author instead chooses to use his diagnosis as a challenge. It is one that Leo will inevitably lose, but at least they had each other and they were deeply in love.

Lynn Snyder is an intelligent and interesting person who loves to travel and who is extremely self-aware. I love that she is unapologetic and firm in her beliefs – many of which I share.

The scene I found the most compelling takes place at a Huntington’s Support Group.

Jane’s eighty-year-old mother, Marilyn tells us that Jane has started to become violent.” Obviously this poses great problems for Marilyn since she is Jane’s sole caregiver. “She says that when her physician suggested Jane be placed in a nursing home, Jane protested loudly, demanding that she be allowed to commit suicide.” Marilyn is deeply religious and does not believe in suicide and the resident social worker tells her to trick Jane into going into a nursing home. She also points out that suicide is illegal. I agree 100% with Lynn’s response to this conversation and I applaud her for voicing her opinion in such an emotional matter. When she says that suicide is a crime, Lynn says:

“I’m well aware of that. But deceiving a mentally unstable person should be and isn’t, which doesn’t mean that we, in this group, should be as unenlightened as our society.”

Lynn leaves the support group – never to return. She realizes that she does not fit in, which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

Lynn also does a credible job of articulating the helplessness and despair that is often felt by those who have to watch a loved one deteriorate, knowing there is nothing they can do to save them. This is my favorite quote from the book:

“I want to help him speak and walk. I want to rub strength into his fingers so that he can play the piano. I love him so much, and it seems incredible that I can’t translate my love into restoring what is rightfully his – speech, mobility, everything that allows him to be who he is.”

There is so much emotion in those few short sentences and Lynn’s love for Leo shines like a beacon for the rest of us.

I rate this book as 4 out of 5 Stars ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

The one thing that I would have liked to see would have been some photos the couple and possibly some photos of their travels and their homes.

Title: GEMINKNOT

Author: ALEXANDER FRANCIS

Type of Book: SOFTCOVER – LARGE PRINT – AUTOGRAPHED

Genre: DRAMA

Length: 353 PAGES

Publisher: ARCUS VERBA PUBLISHING

Release Date: SEPTEMBER 15, 2015

ISBN: 978-1-942420-18-7

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

The story begins when a young, ambitious reporter, employed by a small town newspaper, is ordered to visit the local nursing home to report on a couple who has been married for many years. Jill is annoyed because she is sick of reporting on things like the local garden club and she figures that this assignment will be more of the same.

When Jill first meets Mike she is touched by the depth of the love he obviously still feels for his wife, Mary. But, Jill still believes that her story will be little more than a fluff piece.

When Mike begins by telling her that he was switched at birth for one of a pair of twins, Jill’s interest is piqued.

As Mike continues to talk, they are joined by Mary who is dying and the story gets more & more interesting as details emerge.

This story includes an unlikely and unique love story, mob affiliations, murder, a young man off to fight in World War II, and much more.

As Jill is drawn into the story, so is the reader. It is impossible to not want to know more about this elderly pair of lovebirds. Readers will want to know what the secret is to holding onto that love for a lifetime.

As beautiful and touching as the story of Mike and Mary seems to be, they also seem to have been magnets for trouble and they are both touched by evil at different times in their lives.

The author does a great job of showing both the best of mankind and the worst. Every chapter in GEMINKNOT throbs with emotion.

It is definitely worth reading and I loved the large print edition and how easy it was on my eyes.

I rate GEMINKNOT as 4 out of 5 Stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Alexander Francis grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and went to college there.

His first attempt at writing was to re-create some favorite episodes from his childhood and, to poke a bit of fun at his brother.

In college, Alexander discovered an ability to write poetry, thanks to a rather demanding English professor.

Life intervened, and there was a large hiatus before he found time to write again. His first attempt came almost by accident, because one day he simply wrote down what had happened to him the previous evening.

That story eventually became the book ARE WE A BAND YET and at the time, the few who read it were full of praise. Because the story was personal, and some of the characters real, he declined to publish it for a long time. But his language skills and storytelling were re-awakened by that first attempt, and since then, he has gone on to write eight full-length novels, all the while working on his style and literary abilities.

He says that what most interests him is the interrelationship between men and women. Itโ€™s a subject which has tested writers and storytellers for eons and is truly inexhaustible. Each situation is both unique and timeless, as well as compelling.

During Alexander’s rather short career, his emotions have been awakened, and he attempts to give his readers the intensity of his feelings through words. Two of his novels (Beware The Exit and Memory Gap) were inspired by dreams, and after recalling the fragments that remained the next morning, he put the essence down on paper and began the laborious task of creating an exciting book.

He says that his writing is just getting started, because everywhere he looks, he can see the outline of yet another book which needs telling, another exciting tale or tender moment which can be created in ink and paper.

 I LOVED THIS BOOK!

The world-buulding is truly exceptional. The author has created not just a single city or even a single state; he has created an entire world that is like a MAD MAX version of a mixture of Tolkein’s Middle Earth and Medieval England.

RED DEATH is a story of teens surviving in a world where even the air they breathe can kill them. They need to learn to adapt and they need to learn to plan for the future. They must achieve all of this in a world where corruption and greed hide in the most unexpected of places.

The story takes place many centuries after a virus was unleashed on the world and decimated the human population. Survivors have splintered into tribes and the virus is still a problem. No one lives long past the age of 21 – eventually they all succomb to the virus that permeates the very air they breathe.

There is one colony that was isolated from the rest of the world during the Apocalypse. The virus – THE RED DEATH – is still a problem and no known cure exists, but the people of Eden are protected by isolating the air they breathe and by killing anyone who comes too close to their hidden sanctuary. Trained “Guardians” are responsible for keeping Eden safe.

One of those Guardians is seventeen year old Aaliss. She is the best of the Guardians and takes her job very seriously. She also takes the job of protecting her thirteen year old brother Wilky seriously.

Wilky may only be thirteen years old, and a bit – OK, A LOT – strange, but he is also a genius who discovers a cure for the plague.

When the High Priest finds out about the cure, he sees it as a way to solidify his power. There is just one small problem – Wilky and his sister Aaliss. He needs them gone for his plan to succeed so he brands them traitors.

The penalty for being a traitor is death and so Aaliss and Wilky run for their lives.

” They seek refuge in the last place Aaliss thought sheโ€™d ever goโ€”beyond the boundaries of Eden, and into the land of the Soulless. Here they must navigate a medieval world filled with witches, magic, and warrior kingdoms run by Elders who are only a few years older than her.”

Aaliss had been told from birth that those who lived outside of Eden were savages who had no souls.

But as Aaliss spends time with the people of the Tribes, she starts to believe that maybe, just maybe, everything she ever thought she knew was a lie.

The characters in this book are written so vividly that they start to feel real to the reader. They fairly leap off the page and are complex and believable.

RED DEATH contains dynamic writing and an epic plot-line that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Not only is this book highly entertaining but it also examines topics that everyone can relate to.

Aaliss’s struggle between believing in what she has been taught her entire life and what she has witnessed and experienced for herself is reminiscent of the struggle for youth to follow the religion of their parents.

The High Priest turning on Aaliss and her brother teaches readers the lesson that what people are like in public and what they are like behind closed doors are not necessarily the same.

There are so many facets to this story that I actually plan to re-read it because I believe I might even enjoy it more the second time around.

Although this book is targeted at a Young Adult and New Adult readership, I firmly believe that it can (and will) be enjoyed by readers of ages 14 to 114.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I rate it as 5 out of 5 Stars, but would rate it higher if that were possible.

FROM THE BACK COVER:

LONDON, 1758

Orphan Jem Connolly, disguised as a boy, works for physician John Abernathy and makes medicine on the side with herbalist Margery Jamison. Life is good, except for Jem’s inborn magic, which forces her to listen to what animals are thinking and to know, by touch, which illnesses hide deep inside Abernathy’s patients.

Lately, Jem’s Second Sight has flung her spirit into birds, leaving her body behind and helpless.

Jem wants to try to control her magic on her own, but Abernathy thinks Jem should study in Cornwall with Margery’s Sighted grandmother.

When Jem’s old enemy, Patch, turns up looking for Jem, she is forced to flee to windswept Bodmin Moor and stay with Granny Kestrel, who lives near an ancient stone circle saturated with Old Magic.

Can Granny teach Jem how to control her Second Sight, or will it continue to control her?

MY REVIEW:

This is the second book in the “JEM” series which I was unaware of when I began reading. Fortunately for me, it did not matter. Author Delaney Green has beautifully woven the pertinent details from the first book into the storyline of Book Two. She does this so seemlessly that readers will be unaware that this information was not new to readers of Book One. By the time I reached the one-third mark, I felt that I had a solid grasp on Jem’s backstory as well as an insight into her psychology.

This book contains details about the way of life in England in the years before the US (or The Colonies as they were known at the time) went to war with England for Independence.

I was fascinated with not only the core story, but also with the way the author wove historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin into the tale in such a way that it seemed not only possible, but also plausible.

Benjamin Franklin

Aside from the incredibly interesting and detailed historical elements of this story are also the powers that Jem has which are also intriguing.

Photo obtained from the Georgian Gentleman Blog

When she flees London and goes to live on the Moor with Granny, she learns how to harness and use her powers.

Then, there is also the mystery of Jem’s genealogy which will draw readers further into Jem’s world.

It is impossible not to be sucked in to this book and it is incredibly hard to put it down once you begin reading.

I rate this historical fiction book as 5 out of 5 stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

I also plan to go back and read the first book in this series and I am very much looking forward to reading more about Jem’s adventures.

SKITTER by Ezekiel Boone is the second book in THE HATCHING Series and it is even better than Book One. THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU REALIZE WHY WE SHOULD BE AFRAID OF SPIDERS.ย

Title: SKITTER

Series: THE HATCHING: BOOK TWO

Author: EZEKIEL BOONE

Type of Book: HARDCOVER

Genre: HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 352 PAGES

Publisher: SIMON AND SCHUSTER

Release Date: MAY 9, 2017

ISBN: 9781501125072

Price:  $26.99 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

If you were a bit scared of spiders before reading the first book in this series then you probably now have an extreme case of arachniphobia after reading THE HATCHING. Well, once you read SKITTER, that arachniphobia will morph into a full-blown neurosis. You might even need therapy. Seriously!

I had been waiting (not very patiently) for the sequel to THE HATCHING and I was thrilled when I was able to read an ARC (Advance Review Copy) courtesy of the publisher and Netgalley. The bad news is that if you are not a reviewer like me, you will have to wait until May 2017 for this book to be released. Might I suggest that you spend some of that time re-reading THE HATCHING.

In the first book we learned that a very old spider species has awakened from their slumber and that they were hungry. A group of researchers found an old dried out egg sac and sent it to America for identification and study.

That simple event seemed to trigger a worldwide awakening of spider egg sacs that had lain dormant all over the world for thousands of years. The spiders were unlike any that humans had encountered since the beginning of recorded history. They were bigger, they were meaner and they were much deadlier.

Worse than finding egg sacs, people discovered (too late) that the spiders often travelled inside people who had no knowledge that they had even been bitten. Thus they spread throughout the world – much as the spread of a viral pandemic.

Los Angeles is deemed lost and it’s residents are quarantined as are many other cities and provinces around the world. Just as it seemed that all was lost, the spiders seemed to have reached the end of their life span and they all died off. However, they did leave thousands if not millions of egg sacs behind.

Now, it seems that all that is left is the clean up and to eradicate any egg sac sites and then all should be ok. Right?

Wrong! In SKITTER we learn that the threat is not over and that, in fact, that first wave of spiders was only the beginning.

Something is coming. Something really bad. The question is: Can mankind survive it?

You will need to read SKITTER to find out.

This book may sound like a typical horror story, but it is anything but. Both THE HATCHING and SKITTER are actually a mixture of multiple genres. Yes, there is definitely a horror element to this story, but it is much more. In fact, I could argue that it fits into every category of adult fiction.

It is a thriller. It is a drama. It is very much a mystery. It is Apocalyptic Fiction as well as Science Fiction. It is literally everything a reader could possibly want in a great book and for that reason I give this book the highest possible rating of 5 out of 5 Stars. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

I cannot wait to get my hands on the third installment of THE HATCHING SERIES. Ezekiel Boone has a lifetime fan in me!
