BOOK DESCRIPTION (From Amazon)

One teen’s incredible journey may just blow his father’s mind…

Fourteen-year-old Bernard thinks outside the box. The only problem is that neither his school nor his ultra-rational physicist father appreciate his unique ideas. When he reacts to a stressful situation at school by mooning the class, his suspension sends him straight to his father’s workplace. After his frustrated father leaves him unattended, Bernard does what any teen would do: wander into the particle accelerator and accidentally get transported through a wormhole!

Edit It doesn’t take long for Bernard to realize he’s in deep trouble. Not only did the wormhole drop him in the middle of a civil war over a depleted resource, but the battle is actually taking place inside his father’s brain. Bernard has one chance to save the dying side of his father’s creative brain from the tyrannical left side. Can he use his outside-the-box thinking to save his father’s life?

Brainwalker is a young adult sci-fi fantasy novel that turns the world of neuroscience on its head. If you like incredible fantasy worlds, fast-paced entertainment, and the human mind, then you’ll love Robyn Mundell and Stephan Lacast’s amazing journey inside the brain.

MY REVIEW:

 This middle grade novel is wonderfully written and readers from ages 8 – 12 will love this book.

The author has imagined an entire world inside the brain of a boy’s father.

I loved the fact that the boy and his father were very different and that they had trouble communicating and understanding each other.

When the boy is sucked through a wormhole and ends up inside his father’s brain, he finds himself on a mission to save his father’s life.

During his quest he ends up learning more about his father and more about himself in the process.

A great read with a terrific message.

I rate this as 4 out of 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

DARK LANDS: REQUIEM by Lyn I Kelly will take readers to a world unlike any other

Title: DARK LANDS: REQUIEM

Series: THE DARK LANDS CHRONOLOGY: BOOK ONE

Author: LYN I. KELLY

Genre: SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 203 PAGES

Publisher: SELF-PUBLISHED

Release Date: 2015

ISBN: 9 8-1-4834-3423-0

Price: $15.94 CDN (PAPERBACK)

Rating: 4 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Seventeen-year-old Webb Thompson and his younger sister Sundown awoke to find themselves not in their own beds, but in a bizarre landscape with field upon field of grass stretching in all directions. The sky was black overhead and it seemed like a storm was moving quickly toward them.

They have awoken in the Dark Lands; a place between the world of the living and the land of the dead. Are they alive? Are they dead? Or, like the place they find themselves in, are they something in between.

They soon discover that the Dark Lands are entrenched in a battle between good and evil. To make matters worse, Webb and Sundown have hidden powers that will be needed if the evil Dark Man is to be stopped.

Author Lyn I. Kelly has crafted an intense supernatural thriller populated with new and interesting creatures as well as with many fascinating characters.

This book will be enjoyed by readers who loved the Harry Potter series and those that want a Young Adult book with some “bite” to it.

The landscape of the Dark Lands is as diverse as it is terrifying. In a land where the good guys (the Glorians) must maintain a delicate balance. It is their job to ensure that the Dark Man and his minions never breach the walls of their fortress nor tip the scales so that evil outweighs goodness.

I enjoyed the book and found the characters to be believable. Webb is a typical teenager insofar as he is impulsive and has a hard time reigning in extreme emotions – especially anger.

Think about it! Wouldn’t you be pretty angry if you woke up to find out that you were dead and that you would never see or speak to your family and friends ever again?

Webb must learn to control his anger lest the Dark Man use it to take control.

The storyline moves along at a decent pace and although I found certain elements of the story to be predictable, I still enjoyed the read.

I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers ages 12 and up. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

Where is The Wall?” I asked my father one night while he brushed my hair.
“Somewhere east . . . And you’re going to find it one day, I know you are. I hear,” he whispered, “there’s an underground passageway that leads straight there.”

Joy Montgomery’s life has never been as it seems. She knows this now. Her tragic journey has been a complex mirage of dreams and illusions set in place by her ancestors’ secrets and driven by the calculated genius of her late father, Zephyr the Magnificent. In the Greenleigh Tree Factory, under the rule of the wretched Superiors, he’d prepared her for this future as if he’d already known the outcome. He’d instilled into her the quest for truth, freedom, and love, and had given her the strength to guard with her life those she now protects, some of whom she must risk her life to save.
Now, the treemakers and the saltminers are split over Bygonne. They must acquire the Seeker’s Keys with the help of Zephyr’s clues, which also must be found along the way. Stakes are high, war is coming, and now, Joy has everything to lose. Will they be triumphant, like Cheyenne said they’d be, and grasp the promised victory? Or will they face defeat at the hands of Lord Daumier and lose the future waiting for them on the other side of The Wall?

“What did you see in me?”
“That you’re a hero. You’re my hero.”
“I’m no hero, Joy. Don’t ever forget this, okay? You’re the light in the dark. You’re the love that conquers fear and evil. You’re the hero, Joy. You always have been, and you always will be.”

*** This series is intended for mature YA audiences, as there are mature themes (some abuse, some graphic violence, some sexual situations, some language, character deaths, etc.) which may be too emotionally intense for younger readers, and/or disturbing to those sensitive to such content. ***

MY REVIEW:

This trilogy is absolutely amazing. If the main characters were not teenagers, this would most likely not have billed as Young Adult fiction. It will appeal to readers ages 16 and up who love dystopian fiction.

Someone asked me today what it was that I thought made for a great dystopian book. I did not have to go far to look for answers, Those answers came directly from THE TREEMAKER’S TRILOGY and from this final installment; THE SEEKER’S KEYS. I believe that the main factor in a good dystopian fiction novel is the world-building. If the world is not detailed enough then readers will see through it and not want to continue reading. That is not a problem with this series. The world the characters are living in is horrific and the fact that people were considered expendable may be hard to believe, but author Christina L. Rozelle has done a fantastic job of detailing how the world got to be the way it is in the books.

This last book is a bit different from the first two in the series. In THE SEEKER’S KEYS the “narrator” does not remain a single person. It is told from four alternating viewpoints which allows readers the privilege of getting inside the heads of characters who we previously only knew through Joy’s filters. For me, this fleshed out characters I hadn’t felt I knew as well as some of the others.

At the end of the second book there is still an unresolved love triangle involving Joy. This triangle disappears in this book and concrete decisions about who she chooses are made. Of course, this has far-reaching ramifications, but at least she finally made up her mind.

I do not want to give too much information away but I can tell you that you will NOT be disappointed with this book. It is full of action, emotion – both happy and sad (just like real life) and an epic conclusion. There are quite a few scenes that will surprise readers, which in my mind makes this book even better.

I rate THE SEEKER’S KEYS as 5 out of 5 Stars and with this trilogy I truly believe that Christina L. Rozelle has now joined the ranks of the highest echelons of Young Adult Dystopian Fiction Writers.

TWO MOONS by Speculative Fiction author PK Tyler is a wonderful introduction to a world peopled by two vastly different races. Interesting and Unique.

Title: MOON DUST

Series: TWO MOONS OF SERA PREQUEL

Author: P.K. TYLER

Genre: SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 59 PAGES

Publisher: EVOLVED PUBLISHING

Release Date: MARCH 23, 2015

ISBN: 9781507807972

Rating: 4 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Sometimes it works out for the better when you first discover a new book series that already has a couple books available to read right away. It cuts down on all the angst of waiting for the next book. Such is the case with a series that I only discovered yesterday. The series I am talking about is the TWO MOONS OF SERA Series. To add to the excitement of discovering an talented author that I had not known about, if you visit her website and sign up for her newsletter, she will send a free copy of the prequel to the series: TWO MOONS OF SERA.

MOON DUST introduces readers to an entirely new world which is populated by two vastly different races.

The main character of this story is Nilafay. She is a Sualwet. The Sulawets live beneath the ocean, most of them residing in the Domed City. They have completely hairless bodies and webbed toes (both of which ensure that they are excellent and elegant swimmers.) They have a regulated society that is despotic and there are very clear class divisions.

The other race that inhabits this amazing world are the Erdlanders. This race is the one that seems to most closely resemble humans. They live on the land and have hair on their heads and most of the men have beards. Because the story mostly focuses on Nilafay, we do not learn as muçh about the Erdlanders as we do about the Sualwet.

As seems to happen when two very different races do not attempt to understand each other, they go to war. In fact, the war has been going on for a long time.

On the morning of her much anticipated wedding, Nilafay makes a decision that will not only change her life, but also the lives of both species. Little does she know that her impulsive decision will have consequences far beyond what she could ever have imagined.

I was fascinated by the world that P.K. Tyler has created. She has done a great job of world building and in generating interest in the MOON OF SERA series. I plan to read more and I cannot imagine that anyone reading it would not want to read on and find out what happens next.

This  novella is well written with vivid characters and a well thought out plot. I rate it as 4 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book through her newsletter. I am now officially a fan.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Playwright Lynn Snyder had decided to give up looking for love. In fact, she even briefly contemplated moving far away from San Francisco to live out the rest of her life on the edges of the High Sierra mountain range.

Thankfully she realized that idea would be taking things a bit too far.

Not long after making this monumental life decision, she heard an announcement on her favorite classical music radio station regarding personal ads for meeting people with the same interests (this was many years before the invention of online dating.) Lynn decided she wouldn’t mind meeting new people and answered an ad that interested her.

It was the best decision she had ever made. It was how she met and fell in love with Leo, which led to them having twenty years together.

I expected this book to be a chronicle of their lives together and nothing more, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that while it was what I expected, it was also so much more.

Leo is eventually diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease and at this point in the story it could have taken a dramatic and sad turn. The author instead chooses to use his diagnosis as a challenge. It is one that Leo will inevitably lose, but at least they had each other and they were deeply in love.

Lynn Snyder is an intelligent and interesting person who loves to travel and who is extremely self-aware. I love that she is unapologetic and firm in her beliefs – many of which I share.

The scene I found the most compelling takes place at a Huntington’s Support Group.

Jane’s eighty-year-old mother, Marilyn tells us that Jane has started to become violent.” Obviously this poses great problems for Marilyn since she is Jane’s sole caregiver. “She says that when her physician suggested Jane be placed in a nursing home, Jane protested loudly, demanding that she be allowed to commit suicide.” Marilyn is deeply religious and does not believe in suicide and the resident social worker tells her to trick Jane into going into a nursing home. She also points out that suicide is illegal. I agree 100% with Lynn’s response to this conversation and I applaud her for voicing her opinion in such an emotional matter. When she says that suicide is a crime, Lynn says:

“I’m well aware of that. But deceiving a mentally unstable person should be and isn’t, which doesn’t mean that we, in this group, should be as unenlightened as our society.”

Lynn leaves the support group – never to return. She realizes that she does not fit in, which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

Lynn also does a credible job of articulating the helplessness and despair that is often felt by those who have to watch a loved one deteriorate, knowing there is nothing they can do to save them. This is my favorite quote from the book:

“I want to help him speak and walk. I want to rub strength into his fingers so that he can play the piano. I love him so much, and it seems incredible that I can’t translate my love into restoring what is rightfully his – speech, mobility, everything that allows him to be who he is.”

There is so much emotion in those few short sentences and Lynn’s love for Leo shines like a beacon for the rest of us.

I rate this book as 4 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The one thing that I would have liked to see would have been some photos the couple and possibly some photos of their travels and their homes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Lynn Snyder was born in Akron, Ohio. After receiving a degree in political science from the University of Michigan, she became a journalist.

She spent time in London, England, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, before moving to Northern California.

In addition to journalism, Snyder has also worked as a playwright, campaign publicity director, and literature teacher.

SKITTER by Ezekiel Boone is the second book in THE HATCHING Series and it is even better than Book One. THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU REALIZE WHY WE SHOULD BE AFRAID OF SPIDERS.

Title: SKITTER

Series: THE HATCHING: BOOK TWO

Author: EZEKIEL BOONE

Type of Book: HARDCOVER

Genre: HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 352 PAGES

Publisher: SIMON AND SCHUSTER

Release Date: MAY 9, 2017

ISBN: 9781501125072

Price:  $26.99 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

If you were a bit scared of spiders before reading the first book in this series then you probably now have an extreme case of arachniphobia after reading THE HATCHING. Well, once you read SKITTER, that arachniphobia will morph into a full-blown neurosis. You might even need therapy. Seriously!

I had been waiting (not very patiently) for the sequel to THE HATCHING and I was thrilled when I was able to read an ARC (Advance Review Copy) courtesy of the publisher and Netgalley. The bad news is that if you are not a reviewer like me, you will have to wait until May 2017 for this book to be released. Might I suggest that you spend some of that time re-reading THE HATCHING.

In the first book we learned that a very old spider species has awakened from their slumber and that they were hungry. A group of researchers found an old dried out egg sac and sent it to America for identification and study.

That simple event seemed to trigger a worldwide awakening of spider egg sacs that had lain dormant all over the world for thousands of years. The spiders were unlike any that humans had encountered since the beginning of recorded history. They were bigger, they were meaner and they were much deadlier.

Worse than finding egg sacs, people discovered (too late) that the spiders often travelled inside people who had no knowledge that they had even been bitten. Thus they spread throughout the world – much as the spread of a viral pandemic.

Los Angeles is deemed lost and it’s residents are quarantined as are many other cities and provinces around the world. Just as it seemed that all was lost, the spiders seemed to have reached the end of their life span and they all died off. However, they did leave thousands if not millions of egg sacs behind.

Now, it seems that all that is left is the clean up and to eradicate any egg sac sites and then all should be ok. Right?

Wrong! In SKITTER we learn that the threat is not over and that, in fact, that first wave of spiders was only the beginning.

Something is coming. Something really bad. The question is: Can mankind survive it?

You will need to read SKITTER to find out.

This book may sound like a typical horror story, but it is anything but. Both THE HATCHING and SKITTER are actually a mixture of multiple genres. Yes, there is definitely a horror element to this story, but it is much more. In fact, I could argue that it fits into every category of adult fiction.

It is a thriller. It is a drama. It is very much a mystery. It is Apocalyptic Fiction as well as Science Fiction. It is literally everything a reader could possibly want in a great book and for that reason I give this book the highest possible rating of 5 out of 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I cannot wait to get my hands on the third installment of THE HATCHING SERIES. Ezekiel Boone has a lifetime fan in me!

A unique tale of life nine generations after the apocalypse – THE DEAD ROOM by Stephanie Erickson – A 5 Star Read

MY REVIEW:

322 years after the apocalypse on an island in the Northern Pacific are the last remnants of mankind.

Once an islander reaches thirteen years of age, they are assigned a job that they are expected to do until the day they die.

Ashley Wortham isn’t like the rest of the island’s inhabitants, she is naturally inquisitive. Ashley wants to know what killed off the world’s population and what is out there beyond their island home. But, no matter how much she wishes it were different,  answers are not forthcoming. Asking questions in a world where questions can get you killed is probably not the best idea.

The nine elders who govern the island and it’s residents see it as their responsibility to maintain their way of life. According to the elders:

“If the community raises questions … they will be answered with our standard response – ‘You do not need to concern yourself with that information. You have enough burdens.'”

Mason is Ashley’s best friend and when he walks in on Ashley’s chosen-for-her  “match” beating her and Ashley holding a knife dripping with blood, he is arrested and sentenced to death.

However, the elders have other ideas of how they can use both Ashley and Mason.

This book is the first one in a trilogy that is not only a story of survival in a Post-Apocalyptic world. It is filled with well rounded characters that are incredibly realistic. In fact, Burton reminds me of a Post-Apocalyptic Donald Trump.

There are lots of undertones to this tale. There is unrequited love, political and personal dramas and a mystery to solve as to what really caused the destruction of most of the planet. Not least of all is the question of whether or not the islanders can ever return to the mainland.

The story will hold your attention from page one right up until the cliff-hanger ending. Fortunately, the second book in the series is already available for purchase.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and am looking forward to reading THE DEAD WORLD which is the next book in this dramatic series.

Mary has lived alone in her valley for over 16 years. She has been there ever since her husband banished her from the city. It was supposed to be a punishment and at first it was, but over time she came to love her valley, her garden and even the wildlife that often visited. Now in her late seventies, Mary cannot imagine wanting any other kind of life. She is happy – content.

That is why she is so surprised when she gets a visitor from the city with a message from her husband saying that she is now free to leave the valley. But she already felt free, so why should she leave if she did not want to.

When her first visitor in sixteen years appeared, he somehow brought change with him. That small change in routine leads to more visitors and other changes and Mary wonders why things had to change. And those changes are not for the better.

Reality has come crashing into Mary’s world and she is not sure what to do about it. So, she chooses to ignore it and does nothing. “Routine calmed Mary’s recent upsets and made placid the upheaval that had struck the valley.”

But will Mary be able to survive the changes through sheer force of will? What will happen to her? And why are these changes happening now?

You will have to read IN THE VALLEY WHERE BELLADONNA GROWS to find out.

Although this book is technically a novella since it is only 78 pages long, it contains a full novel’s worth of story.

This book is perfect for anyone who has ever felt alone or abandoned and for anyone wanting a unique read with an interesting twist.

I enjoyed reading this book and loved the twist at the end. I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars. 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Imagine losing your mother before you even had a chance to meet her because  she died giving birth to you.

Historically, women used to die in childbirth all the time, but with the advent of modern medicine, this has become a rare event. The fact that it doesn’t happen very often is no consolation to Isaak who ends up being raised by “parents” who show him not a single ounce of love.

He thought his life already sucked. Little did he know – it was about to get worse – much worse.

On the night of his eighteenth birthday, his life is changed forever.

Lying in bed trying to fight off the mother of all migraine headaches, a mysterious and incredibly strong girl tells him to come with her if he wants to live. (Yes, it sounds kind of like a knock off from a scene from the Terminator – but it is my opinion that she was trying to add a bit of levity to a terrifying situation.) Turns out she showed up just in time and the pair end up running for their lives.

Isaak has no idea what is happening. He has no enemies and can’t think of anyone who would want to hurt him – nevermind someone wanting him dead.

His savior is a girl named Azure and it is her that explains to him that they are both robots and that a highly trained, highly deadly, secret branch of the US government is hunting down and destroying any and all robots.

His only hope for survival is to reach the hidden, secret base of the Underground, which is a group of robots (and some humans) that are fighting back.

The way my description makes it sound, it seems like this book is a science fiction novel, which I guess it is, but really it is a story about the characters themselves.

The character development is excellent but the world building leaves much to be desired. I would have liked to have had more information about the resistance and it’s leaders. I am hoping that this information will be included in the next book in the trilogy.

This book includes so many personal, moral and ethical issues that readers could literally discuss this book for hours before exhausting the different topics. This makes it especially perfect for book clubs.

Here is a list of just a few of the topics and issues that are included in this book:

* Death of a parent
* Child abuse – physical
* Child abuse – mental and emotional
* Puberty
* Teenage Angst
* Bullying
* The desire for acceptance
* The desire for love & connection
* Transgender youth
* Sexuality
* Confusion over sexual identity
* What is the definition of life?
* What makes you human? Is it biology or psychology?
* Moral dilemmas such as:
– Would you leave a friend behind to face certain death in order to save yourself?
– Would you be willing to kill to save yourself?

I could go on and on with the list, but I think you get the idea.

Overall I enjoyed this book and I think that Simon Curtis has done a terrific job on his debut novel. I give BOY ROBOT 4 out of 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

From his dead-end job to his one-bedroom apartment, life so far has been a steady grind, one challenge after another.  But that’s about to change.  During a routine encounter with a police officer in Oakland, Isaac makes a life-changing realization: He can use gravity to do almost anything.  To build or destroy.  To lift up or hold in place.  To bend, straighten, or break apart.

Isaac is suddenly in command of a power beyond his wildest imagination, the power to reshape the world around him, something that—as a biracial black man from hurricane-ravaged Mississippi—he has struggled to do his entire life.  Filled with newfound hope, Isaac immerses himself in the experimentation process: testing his limits, broadening his skill set, and refining his control, all in secret.

But Isaac, a single father of an eleven-year-old daughter, is forced to reveal the extent of his abilities when his daughter is attacked.  This sets in motion a series of events that strips him of everything he’s worked so hard for: his child, his job, and his home.  Pursued relentlessly by the authorities, Isaac is forced to use his abilities in increasingly dramatic and dangerous ways to avoid capture and reunite with his daughter, ultimately learning that the power he wields—though enviable—comes at a deeply unenviable price.

Gravity Breaker challenges us to rethink what it means to be powerful in society.  Isaac’s story is both individual and universal, as it unblinkingly confronts issues such as parenthood, poverty, unearned privilege, and the often strained relationship between the police and communities of color.

MY REVIEW:

At its core, GRAVITY BREAKER is a Science Fiction / Superhero-type story, but this tale also tackles some very real and relevant social issues.

Author Jonathan R. Miller has crafted a superbly entertaining tale of an ordinary man who develops extraordinary powers.

It makes the reader ponder what they would do if they could suddenly control gravity. Would you use the powers for good? Or would the temptation of easy money overwhelm you?

Besides being an engrossing Superhero story, Gravity Breaker is also a commentary on what men of color sometimes have to contend with just because of the color of their skin.

The best word to describe GRAVITY BREAKER is “timely.”

With the recent racial tension in the United States, it is impossible to turn on the television or radio or to open a newspaper without hearing about #BlackLivesMatter as well as the recent police shootings.

The main character in this book is Isaac. He is a single father who is doing his best to provide for his daughter. He works hard every day and stays on the right side of the law. Despite this, he is harassed by the police while working and when he explains to the officer why he is pushing a cart full of laundry bags, the officer does not believe him and wants to place him under arrest.

Where I live, this would never happen. If it did, the entire community (white and colored) would be up in arms. However, I am well aware that things like this happen on a daily basis in many urban centers across North America and it needs to stop.

I commend Jonathan R. Miller for using his writing talent to not only entertain his readers but also to inform them of the injustices that occur in our society.

I do want to ensure potential readers that this book is not just about race issues. Yes, that is part of the story, but it is by no means the only topic

There is a sequel planned for this book. It is set to be released in 2017 and will be titled: TALAH. (TALAH is the name of Isaac’s daughter.) I will be eagerly awaiting it’s release. I am very interested in reading about what happens next.

I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I also feel the need to mention that I first became aware of Jonathan R. Miller when I read his novel FREND which was one of my favorite books of 2015. Check out my review of FREND here.
