KILLING KATIE by BA Spangler will have you looking at your neighbors with suspicion. A great start to a new thriller series.

Length: 386 PAGES

Type of Book: PAPERBACK

Genre: CRIME FICTION, THRILLER

Friendship, murder, betrayal, this book has it all. A fast-paced read that will shock and surprise readers with its many twists and turns.

Housewives, mothers, ladies, women of a certain age, (women of any age actually) – we all have fantasies. Some women fantasize about shopping. Others fantasize about looking like a model. Some even fantasize about having an affair. Fantasies are harmless. It is when fantasy crosses the line into reality that problems arise.

But what happens when your fantasies are a little less mundane and a lot more serious. What happens when your obsession is a secret desire to kill someone? I guess that even that fantasy is harmless, as long as it remains in the realm of imagination. This book blurs the line between thought and action and many unintended consequences arise.

The lead character in B.A. Spangler’s novel is a housewife named Amy.

Amy fantasizes about murder and has fantasized about killing someone ever since her adolescence. In fact, she even fantasized about killing Katie – her best friend. (Hence the title of this book.)

Now she wants to take that fantasy to the next level. The fact that Amy is married to a cop complicates matters, but Amy is determined to live out her fantasy.

When Amy’s exploits end up as cases assigned to her husband, she has to lie to him. One lie becomes two, and two become four; until she is so deep in the lies that she has no idea how to dig her way back out.

“I dared a little taste. At once my life was filled with seductive thrills, embracing my desires, drawing me in until I’d lost sight of who I was.”

I enjoyed this very unusual read. It is different which I really like. I enjoy not knowing what to expect.

If you too want to read a book that will keep you turning the pages and maintain your interest from start to finish, then this is the book for you.

KILLING KATIE is the first book in the AN AFFAIR WITH MURDER series. Book Two – A PAINFUL TRUTH is available now.

I rate KILLING KATIE as 4 out of 5 Stars.🌟🌟🌟🌟

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
(IN HIS OWN WORDS)

Who am I?

I’m a resident of Virginia, living with my wife and children, along with three cats (sometimes more), a mouse, parrot, lizard and the funniest chinchilla on the east coast.

Although I live in Virginia, my heart is still in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I grew up. And I hope that one day, I’ll be able to call Philadelphia home again.

Growing up, I liked to read short stories, but struggled with the words. You see, I had a secret: a sad little secret. Ashamed and embarrassed, I was the little kid in the back row of the schoolroom, quietly moving my lips along with the class while everyone read aloud. I couldn’t read. I couldn’t write. I hoped nobody would notice, but they did. They always did.

By the time I’d reached the fourth grade, my secret wasn’t a secret anymore. The teachers knew something was wrong. Dyslexia. Maybe that is why I liked science fiction so much? All those crazy looking glyphs on the screen, glowing, flashing.

The fix? Back to the third grade for me, and then special classes three days a week. It worked. Once I started reading, I never stopped. Stephen King, Piers Anthony, Dean Koontz, and even the Judy Blume books my sisters discarded.

I’m still one of the slowest readers I know, but school was never a problem again. I finally graduated the third grade, and then kept on going until I finished my Masters.

These days, I work as an engineer and spend my nights writing, editing and thinking up the next great story.

DISCORD by Katy Haye is a YA Novel that defies categorization. 4 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Genre: YOUNG ADULT FICTION, SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 250 PAGES

Publisher: PLUMSHINE BOOKS

ISBN: 9781540412430

Seventeen-year-old Beth has brain damage. She lives in a Steptoe House – a hospital in the English countryside that specializes in helping youths recover from brain trauma.
Her life consists of school classes, medical tests and of playing and  listening to therapeutic music.

Some days she feels great and better yet, she feels almost normal. On those days she contemplates going home and returning to her life. But, what kind of life will she be returning to? She has no memories of her family or her friends, in fact, she remembers nothing of her life before waking up at Steptoe House.

Beth’s bad days are REALLY BAD. On those days she sees and hears ghosts and other shadows. On those days she acknowledges that she is NOT ready to go home after all.

When a boy named Toby arrives at the Institute, Beth’s life will never be the same.

Toby encourages Beth to confront her fears instead of hiding from them. But when strange things begin to happen and Beth’s sense of deja vue starts running overtime, both Beth and Toby set out to discover what exactly it is that is wrong with Steptoe House.

I have to admit that I was pretty sure I had this novel completely figured out by the halfway point of the novel. I also haveto admit how very wrong I was.

What starts out as teen romance novel ends up morphing into a completely different book. In fact, this book is hard to classify into a single genre. It is clearly a Young Adult novel, but it is so much more. It is romance. It is horror. It is science fiction. It is mystery. It is drama. It is even speculative fiction. Whatever the official genre, I enjoyed it immensely.

The cast of characters are diverse and they all seem like ordinary teenagers doing their best to recover from brain injuries so that they can return home to see their families. Families that never visit. According to the doctors, it would be detrimental to their recovery to have visitors. But, it all seems very strange to lead character, Beth. (And to the reader.)

I do not want to include any spoilers in this review, but suffice it to say that if you enjoy books that keep you in suspense and that keep you guessing, then this is a MUST READ.

The author has done a phenomenal job in setting up the story for the next book in the series, and I, for one am excited to read it. Rumour has it that Book Two will be released in March 2017.

I rate DISCORD as 4 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Katy Haye – In Her Own Words:

I spent most of my childhood and adolescence lost in a good book. Even now, and given the tedious necessity to earn a living in order to eat, I spend as much time as possible running around either my own or someone else’s imaginary world.

I’m fascinated by what makes books work – what makes a story so vivid the words themselves melt away and I’m living the character’s life with them?

I’ll be pondering (and very probably ranting) about the nuts and bolts of a good story on my Add More Narrativium blog – please join in. Also on this website, you can find out more about my books, including extracts and where to buy.

NEW RELEASE “PATHOGEN” by Jessica L Webb is a riveting, terrifyingly realistic mystery with multiple sensational twists. A 5 Star, Must Read thriller.

Title: PATHOGEN

Author: JESSICA L. WEBB

Genre: FICTION, THRILLER, MEDICAL THRILLER, LGBTQIA

Length: 288 pages

Release Date: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2016

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Canadian author Jessica L Webb has written a medical thriller worthy of fans of Robin Cook.

Set in the province of British Columbia and with the main character being in a lesbian relationship, this book reflects the world we live in today which is a refreshing change.

This is the second book in the Dr. Kate Morrison series, however, it can easily be read as a stand-alone thriller. I have not yet read TRIGGER which is the first book in this series and during reading I never felt I was missing anything.

Kate is an ER Doctor in a downtown Vancouver hospital where she more often than not deals with patients who are on the lowest rung of the social ladder. So, when she receives an invitation to liason with the local RCMP on an investigation into a potential bio-terrorism threat she accepts the challenge.

Her decision means that she will be investigating alongside her girlfriend Andy who is an RCMP Sergeant. The two head to the ultra-exclusive town of Hidden Valley where homes sell for tens of millions of dollars and the people who live in them think they deserve special treatment.

As the pair start to learn more about the virus that seems to be randomly striking victims from all age groups and all walks of life, they start to wonder if the bio-terrorism threat might actually be real.

But who would want the residents of Hidden Valley to get sick and in some cases, to die? And why? What would prompt someone to do something so strange?

Set in the gorgeous province of British Columbia, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is fast-paced enough that the action never seems to lag and yet contains enough medical information to make it seem eerily realistic.

I hadn’t heard of Jessica L Webb before discovering this book on Netgalley, but I am positive that it is a name I will not soon forget.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars and highly recommend this book to readers over the age of 18 (some scenes and situations are graphic and not for the faint of heart).

DARK LANDS: REQUIEM by Lyn I Kelly will take readers to a world unlike any other

Title: DARK LANDS: REQUIEM

Series: THE DARK LANDS CHRONOLOGY: BOOK ONE

Author: LYN I. KELLY

Genre: SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 203 PAGES

Publisher: SELF-PUBLISHED

Release Date: 2015

ISBN: 9 8-1-4834-3423-0

Price: $15.94 CDN (PAPERBACK)

Seventeen-year-old Webb Thompson and his younger sister Sundown awoke to find themselves not in their own beds, but in a bizarre landscape with field upon field of grass stretching in all directions. The sky was black overhead and it seemed like a storm was moving quickly toward them.

They have awoken in the Dark Lands; a place between the world of the living and the land of the dead. Are they alive? Are they dead? Or, like the place they find themselves in, are they something in between.

They soon discover that the Dark Lands are entrenched in a battle between good and evil. To make matters worse, Webb and Sundown have hidden powers that will be needed if the evil Dark Man is to be stopped.

Author Lyn I. Kelly has crafted an intense supernatural thriller populated with new and interesting creatures as well as with many fascinating characters.

This book will be enjoyed by readers who loved the Harry Potter series and those that want a Young Adult book with some “bite” to it.

The landscape of the Dark Lands is as diverse as it is terrifying. In a land where the good guys (the Glorians) must maintain a delicate balance. It is their job to ensure that the Dark Man and his minions never breach the walls of their fortress nor tip the scales so that evil outweighs goodness.

I enjoyed the book and found the characters to be believable. Webb is a typical teenager insofar as he is impulsive and has a hard time reigning in extreme emotions – especially anger.

Think about it! Wouldn’t you be pretty angry if you woke up to find out that you were dead and that you would never see or speak to your family and friends ever again?

Webb must learn to control his anger lest the Dark Man use it to take control.

The storyline moves along at a decent pace and although I found certain elements of the story to be predictable, I still enjoyed the read.

I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers ages 12 and up. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

Where is The Wall?” I asked my father one night while he brushed my hair.
“Somewhere east . . . And you’re going to find it one day, I know you are. I hear,” he whispered, “there’s an underground passageway that leads straight there.”

Joy Montgomery’s life has never been as it seems. She knows this now. Her tragic journey has been a complex mirage of dreams and illusions set in place by her ancestors’ secrets and driven by the calculated genius of her late father, Zephyr the Magnificent. In the Greenleigh Tree Factory, under the rule of the wretched Superiors, he’d prepared her for this future as if he’d already known the outcome. He’d instilled into her the quest for truth, freedom, and love, and had given her the strength to guard with her life those she now protects, some of whom she must risk her life to save.
Now, the treemakers and the saltminers are split over Bygonne. They must acquire the Seeker’s Keys with the help of Zephyr’s clues, which also must be found along the way. Stakes are high, war is coming, and now, Joy has everything to lose. Will they be triumphant, like Cheyenne said they’d be, and grasp the promised victory? Or will they face defeat at the hands of Lord Daumier and lose the future waiting for them on the other side of The Wall?

“What did you see in me?”
“That you’re a hero. You’re my hero.”
“I’m no hero, Joy. Don’t ever forget this, okay? You’re the light in the dark. You’re the love that conquers fear and evil. You’re the hero, Joy. You always have been, and you always will be.”

*** This series is intended for mature YA audiences, as there are mature themes (some abuse, some graphic violence, some sexual situations, some language, character deaths, etc.) which may be too emotionally intense for younger readers, and/or disturbing to those sensitive to such content. ***

MY REVIEW:

This trilogy is absolutely amazing. If the main characters were not teenagers, this would most likely not have billed as Young Adult fiction. It will appeal to readers ages 16 and up who love dystopian fiction.

Someone asked me today what it was that I thought made for a great dystopian book. I did not have to go far to look for answers, Those answers came directly from THE TREEMAKER’S TRILOGY and from this final installment; THE SEEKER’S KEYS. I believe that the main factor in a good dystopian fiction novel is the world-building. If the world is not detailed enough then readers will see through it and not want to continue reading. That is not a problem with this series. The world the characters are living in is horrific and the fact that people were considered expendable may be hard to believe, but author Christina L. Rozelle has done a fantastic job of detailing how the world got to be the way it is in the books.

This last book is a bit different from the first two in the series. In THE SEEKER’S KEYS the “narrator” does not remain a single person. It is told from four alternating viewpoints which allows readers the privilege of getting inside the heads of characters who we previously only knew through Joy’s filters. For me, this fleshed out characters I hadn’t felt I knew as well as some of the others.

At the end of the second book there is still an unresolved love triangle involving Joy. This triangle disappears in this book and concrete decisions about who she chooses are made. Of course, this has far-reaching ramifications, but at least she finally made up her mind.

I do not want to give too much information away but I can tell you that you will NOT be disappointed with this book. It is full of action, emotion – both happy and sad (just like real life) and an epic conclusion. There are quite a few scenes that will surprise readers, which in my mind makes this book even better.

I rate THE SEEKER’S KEYS as 5 out of 5 Stars and with this trilogy I truly believe that Christina L. Rozelle has now joined the ranks of the highest echelons of Young Adult Dystopian Fiction Writers.

 I LOVED THIS BOOK!

The world-buulding is truly exceptional. The author has created not just a single city or even a single state; he has created an entire world that is like a MAD MAX version of a mixture of Tolkein’s Middle Earth and Medieval England.

RED DEATH is a story of teens surviving in a world where even the air they breathe can kill them. They need to learn to adapt and they need to learn to plan for the future. They must achieve all of this in a world where corruption and greed hide in the most unexpected of places.

The story takes place many centuries after a virus was unleashed on the world and decimated the human population. Survivors have splintered into tribes and the virus is still a problem. No one lives long past the age of 21 – eventually they all succomb to the virus that permeates the very air they breathe.

There is one colony that was isolated from the rest of the world during the Apocalypse. The virus – THE RED DEATH – is still a problem and no known cure exists, but the people of Eden are protected by isolating the air they breathe and by killing anyone who comes too close to their hidden sanctuary. Trained “Guardians” are responsible for keeping Eden safe.

One of those Guardians is seventeen year old Aaliss. She is the best of the Guardians and takes her job very seriously. She also takes the job of protecting her thirteen year old brother Wilky seriously.

Wilky may only be thirteen years old, and a bit – OK, A LOT – strange, but he is also a genius who discovers a cure for the plague.

When the High Priest finds out about the cure, he sees it as a way to solidify his power. There is just one small problem – Wilky and his sister Aaliss. He needs them gone for his plan to succeed so he brands them traitors.

The penalty for being a traitor is death and so Aaliss and Wilky run for their lives.

” They seek refuge in the last place Aaliss thought she’d ever go—beyond the boundaries of Eden, and into the land of the Soulless. Here they must navigate a medieval world filled with witches, magic, and warrior kingdoms run by Elders who are only a few years older than her.”

Aaliss had been told from birth that those who lived outside of Eden were savages who had no souls.

But as Aaliss spends time with the people of the Tribes, she starts to believe that maybe, just maybe, everything she ever thought she knew was a lie.

The characters in this book are written so vividly that they start to feel real to the reader. They fairly leap off the page and are complex and believable.

RED DEATH contains dynamic writing and an epic plot-line that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Not only is this book highly entertaining but it also examines topics that everyone can relate to.

Aaliss’s struggle between believing in what she has been taught her entire life and what she has witnessed and experienced for herself is reminiscent of the struggle for youth to follow the religion of their parents.

The High Priest turning on Aaliss and her brother teaches readers the lesson that what people are like in public and what they are like behind closed doors are not necessarily the same.

There are so many facets to this story that I actually plan to re-read it because I believe I might even enjoy it more the second time around.

Although this book is targeted at a Young Adult and New Adult readership, I firmly believe that it can (and will) be enjoyed by readers of ages 14 to 114.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I rate it as 5 out of 5 Stars, but would rate it higher if that were possible.

SKITTER by Ezekiel Boone is the second book in THE HATCHING Series and it is even better than Book One. THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU REALIZE WHY WE SHOULD BE AFRAID OF SPIDERS.

Title: SKITTER

Series: THE HATCHING: BOOK TWO

Author: EZEKIEL BOONE

Type of Book: HARDCOVER

Genre: HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION

Length: 352 PAGES

Publisher: SIMON AND SCHUSTER

Release Date: MAY 9, 2017

ISBN: 9781501125072

Price:  $26.99 USD

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

If you were a bit scared of spiders before reading the first book in this series then you probably now have an extreme case of arachniphobia after reading THE HATCHING. Well, once you read SKITTER, that arachniphobia will morph into a full-blown neurosis. You might even need therapy. Seriously!

I had been waiting (not very patiently) for the sequel to THE HATCHING and I was thrilled when I was able to read an ARC (Advance Review Copy) courtesy of the publisher and Netgalley. The bad news is that if you are not a reviewer like me, you will have to wait until May 2017 for this book to be released. Might I suggest that you spend some of that time re-reading THE HATCHING.

In the first book we learned that a very old spider species has awakened from their slumber and that they were hungry. A group of researchers found an old dried out egg sac and sent it to America for identification and study.

That simple event seemed to trigger a worldwide awakening of spider egg sacs that had lain dormant all over the world for thousands of years. The spiders were unlike any that humans had encountered since the beginning of recorded history. They were bigger, they were meaner and they were much deadlier.

Worse than finding egg sacs, people discovered (too late) that the spiders often travelled inside people who had no knowledge that they had even been bitten. Thus they spread throughout the world – much as the spread of a viral pandemic.

Los Angeles is deemed lost and it’s residents are quarantined as are many other cities and provinces around the world. Just as it seemed that all was lost, the spiders seemed to have reached the end of their life span and they all died off. However, they did leave thousands if not millions of egg sacs behind.

Now, it seems that all that is left is the clean up and to eradicate any egg sac sites and then all should be ok. Right?

Wrong! In SKITTER we learn that the threat is not over and that, in fact, that first wave of spiders was only the beginning.

Something is coming. Something really bad. The question is: Can mankind survive it?

You will need to read SKITTER to find out.

This book may sound like a typical horror story, but it is anything but. Both THE HATCHING and SKITTER are actually a mixture of multiple genres. Yes, there is definitely a horror element to this story, but it is much more. In fact, I could argue that it fits into every category of adult fiction.

It is a thriller. It is a drama. It is very much a mystery. It is Apocalyptic Fiction as well as Science Fiction. It is literally everything a reader could possibly want in a great book and for that reason I give this book the highest possible rating of 5 out of 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I cannot wait to get my hands on the third installment of THE HATCHING SERIES. Ezekiel Boone has a lifetime fan in me!

FROM THE INTRODUCTION:

On the banks of the canal in Jericho, Oxford, sits a very ordinary-looking commercial property with a sign that says, “Hipposync Enterprises, Dealers in Rare Books & Manuscripts.”

Many people have read that sign and moved on, pausing only to wonder if such a shabby concern is still in business. But behind that careworn facade lives something else altogether. Something strange and arcane and vital to the security of the country and…yes, very probably the world.

So what do they really do in Hipposync Enterprises?

This book is the first in a series recounting  the cases plucked from their archives.

Ready?

Then buckle up.

MY REVIEW:

This book is the first of a series called HIPPOSYNC ENTERPRISES.

This novella is a wonderful introduction to the author’s world. In the real world (the one us humans inhabit) the Minister for Internal Affairs, Sebastian O’Hoy (known to the tabloids as SoHo) has disappeared from his highly secure home and seems to have vanished into thin air. “They are certain he did not leave the premises last night, but there is no sign of him this morning … There were symbols scrawled on the bedroom wall in what appears to be blood…”

Because of the strange symbols on the wall, the Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland decides that he needs to call the DOF – The Department of Fimmigration. “The DOF’s real function, of course, was to monitor the comings and goings of their own people, those Fae (Homo Elementus) who wanted to try their luck in a world where their own toned-down supernatural skills might be of some use.”

Captain Kylah Porter is a Fae and she is put in charge of finding the wayward Minister. The local police liason assigned to work with her thinks the DOF is a joke and that the regular police do not need their help. Kylah is sure that the disappearance has something to do with the Fae.

To that end, she travels to the hidden realm that most humans do not believe exists. It is a place where “Self-Stacking cutlery, bottomless drinking mugs, stay-warm toilet seats – all were a reality of daily life.”

What follows is part mystery, part comedy, part thriller and even part love story. All these parts add up to one highly entertaining read.

My favorite line in the novella is the author’s description of the facade of the building that houses Hipposync Enterprises, Dealers in Rare Books & Manuscripts (which is actually the Headquarters of the DOF).

“Its roots were exemplified by ornate signage: a hanging board with more calligraphic curlicues than a Christina Aguilera wig.”

There is also a character in the story named Mr. Viarga, who “… stood beneath them with a wooden ruler pointing hither and thither.” Get it? Viarga – wood? Ha ha!

I enjoyed this quick read and it has piqued my interest in the Hipposync Enterprises Series. I am not usually a fan of urban fantasy as it all seems the same to me, but EVERY LITTLE EVIL breaks the mold and creates its own niche genre.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars for pure ingenuity and uniqueness. I am now a fan of author D.C. Farmer.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy such reads as Piers Anthony’s Xanth series. Plus, the book is FREE, so you have nothing to lose.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Once a successful doctor of medicine, DC Farmer now works two days a week for the NHS and, thanks to the wonders of Krudian physics, the other nine days a week for Hipposync Enterprises, as a scribe.

Hipposync was established in the early fourteenth century as a purveyor and publisher of rare books, the sort of stuff you are not able to get elsewhere and which contains information as varied as how to guard your castle against the Hordes of Maltasub using Harpie blood and tar, and how to change a beetle into a useful toothpick.

DC’s role in documenting the work of the Fimmigration Service  has, over the years, led to the realization that the world needs to know. Moreover, if he doesn’t tell someone soon he is going to burst. So, within the pages of his books  you will find actual accounts of the splendid work of the Fimmigration Service, beginning with The 400 Lb Gorilla.

Jeffrey Archer – SINS OF THE FATHER – Review of Book Two of the Bestselling Series THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES – A 5 Star Read 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Rating: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

First off I have to admit that I have not read book one in the Clifton Chronicles series. I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaway program. Fortunately for me, it was not necessary to have read the first book to understand and to enjoy THE SINS OF THE FATHER.

Historical fiction is exceptionally difficult to write, especially if it includes specific years when significant events have taken place as is the case with this book. However, Jeffrey Archer is a professional and he is able to convincingly write about the time period in question.

This series has been referred to as: “Archer’s most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author.” And it is easy to understand why.

The book begins in 1939 on the docks of New York City. Harry Clifton has decided to take on a new identity in order to cut all ties to his past. He chooses to call himself Tom Bradshaw (the name of a fellow shipmate who died at sea) but little did he know that he chose the wrong person to impersonate.

Upon arrival on the docks, he is immediately arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

When Sefton Jelks, a famous (and usually expensive) lawyer, offers his services for free, Harry has little choice but to accept his advice since he has no money. After Harry is tried, found guilty and sentenced, Jelks disappears, and the only way for Harry to prove his innocence would be to reveal his true identity which  he has sworn not to do. He knows that in order to set free the woman he loves, he must let everyone back in England believe that he died at sea.

Harry begins serving out his prison sentence unaware that Emma (the woman he loves more than anything else) has given birth to a son – his son.

Emma refuses to believe that Harry is dead and travels to New York to try to prove her theory.

This novel revolves around secrets – both personal and familial and gives reader a glimpse into the lives of those on both sides of the ocean both before and during World War II.

“The Sins of the Father bears all the characteristic twists of a classic Archer novel, and leaves readers wanting more.”

The author does an amazing job of explaining the backstory so that it did not matter that I had not read the first book. Jeffrey Archer has a gift for drawing readers into the story and making them care about what happens to them. This is especially true of the character Emma Barrington. It is impossible not to admire her dedication and fortitude during a time in history when women were often not taken seriously.

Because of the astonishing amount of detail and the obvious amount of research that must have gone into writing this book and the amazing character development, I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

It has often been said that Jeffrey Archer’s own story would make an international bestseller. He was born in London, brought up in Somerset, the son of a printer, and educated at Wellington School, and Brasenose College, Oxford.

After leaving Oxford he was elected to the Greater London Council, and three years later at the age of 29, he became Member of Parliament for Louth. After five years in the Commons and a promising political career ahead of him, he invested heavily in a Canadian company called Aquablast, on the advice of the Bank of Boston. The company went into liquidation, and three directors were later sent to jail for fraud. Left on the brink of bankruptcy, he resigned from the House of Commons.

Aged 34, determined to repay his creditors in full, he sat down to write his first novel Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less. Written at the home of his former Oxford Principal, it was taken up by the Literary Agent, Debbie Owen, and sold to 17 countries within a year. It was also made into a successful serial for BBC Radio 4, and was later televised in 1990 by the BBC.

Since then, Jeffrey Archer has produced over 25 published titles and sold over 270 million copies around the world, in 97 countries and more than 37 languages. He is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (eighteen times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries).

Jeffrey’s latest project is a seven-book saga called the Clifton Chronicles. Book One, Only Time Will Tell, published in 2011, topped the charts around the world, spending 12 weeks at No.1 in India. Books two, The Sins of the Father published in March 2012, and three, Best Kept Secret published in March 2013, also went straight to No.1 in the UK, India, Australia and South Africa. The fourth book in the series, Be Careful What You Wish For, came out in hardback in March 2014, and spent twelve weeks in the top 10—four of them at #1—on the Sunday Times Best Seller list, and also went to #1 in Australia, India, and South Africa.

Jeffrey Archer was Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from September 1985 until November 1986. In 1991, he was co-ordinator for the Campaign for Kurdish Relief, and he is also an amateur charity auctioneer. Jeffrey Archer was made a Life Peer in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1992.

Jeffrey has been married for 48 years to Dame Mary Archer DBE, who is Chairman of the Science Museum. They have two sons, William and James, and two grandsons, and divide their time between homes in London, Cambridge and Mallorca.

MY REVIEW:

322 years after the apocalypse on an island in the Northern Pacific are the last remnants of mankind.

Once an islander reaches thirteen years of age, they are assigned a job that they are expected to do until the day they die.

Ashley Wortham isn’t like the rest of the island’s inhabitants, she is naturally inquisitive. Ashley wants to know what killed off the world’s population and what is out there beyond their island home. But, no matter how much she wishes it were different,  answers are not forthcoming. Asking questions in a world where questions can get you killed is probably not the best idea.

The nine elders who govern the island and it’s residents see it as their responsibility to maintain their way of life. According to the elders:

“If the community raises questions … they will be answered with our standard response – ‘You do not need to concern yourself with that information. You have enough burdens.'”

Mason is Ashley’s best friend and when he walks in on Ashley’s chosen-for-her  “match” beating her and Ashley holding a knife dripping with blood, he is arrested and sentenced to death.

However, the elders have other ideas of how they can use both Ashley and Mason.

This book is the first one in a trilogy that is not only a story of survival in a Post-Apocalyptic world. It is filled with well rounded characters that are incredibly realistic. In fact, Burton reminds me of a Post-Apocalyptic Donald Trump.

There are lots of undertones to this tale. There is unrequited love, political and personal dramas and a mystery to solve as to what really caused the destruction of most of the planet. Not least of all is the question of whether or not the islanders can ever return to the mainland.

The story will hold your attention from page one right up until the cliff-hanger ending. Fortunately, the second book in the series is already available for purchase.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and am looking forward to reading THE DEAD WORLD which is the next book in this dramatic series.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Stephanie Erickson was born in Michigan but is essentially a native Floridian.  You can tell because she can’t handle cold temperatures.

She graduated from Flagler College in 2005 with a B.A. in English.  Always the bibliophile, she did what she could to live and breathe the written word.  After graduation, she worked for a large circulation newspaper in South Florida, but as we all know they are a dying breed.  No matter, because she voluntarily departed copy editing and page design to follow her husband in his pursuit of an aviation career.  Once he was settled into his career, she could once again return to storytelling.  Her first novel, The Blackout, was a surprise hit upon its release and she’s been trying to duplicate it ever since.

Currently, she is working on her 11th novel and is placing her hope in you, the reader, to devour it and her other 10 novels so she may continue her love affair with words.

Stephanie lives with her husband and their daughter along Florida’s Treasure Coast.
