DESCRIPTION:

Athlete Beth once ran for glory, now she runs for her own survival.

The undead can run, and run fast. They do not tire, do not slow, do not rest. And they never stop. Ever.

Beth is alone on a quiet country road, a zombie on her tail. With an injured knee and safety more than ten miles away, can she make it? Or will she be the zombie’s victory dinner?

Second place is dead last…

MY REVIEW:

Before the EMP pulse that crippled humanity, and the zombie virus that flourished in its aftermath, Beth was a long-distance runner, and a damned good one.

Ha! Ha! “Damned,” how appropriate for this story.

The story begins with Beth running down a country road. Chasing her is a zombie, a very fast zombie.

Beth’s philosophy had always been: “The second you showed weakness to your opponent was the moment you were doomed.” She is determined to outrun the zombie, but is hampered by an injured knee.

This race has dire consequences if she loses.

Even though this is only a short story, I enjoyed it very much. The ending will surprise most readers which I think is awesome.

I rate this story as 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Perrin Briar was born in Huntingdon, in the UK. He has worked as a bookie, salesman, factory hand and stock counter. He eventually got into TV and worked on various shows in the production and development departments. He currently teaches English in South Korea.

The Blood Memory books involve a group surviving at sea in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world. The first book follows Jordan Grant, who wakes up knowing nothing about the virus or the world as it now is. During the first season Jordan unlocks key memories in his past that have a dramatic effect on the world now.

The Z-Minus Trilogy follows Chris and Maisie, a father and daughter with a bad relationship. Unlike other zombie books, in this series the virus takes eight hours to spread throughout the host’s body. In the first book Chris uses this time to get his daughter somewhere safe. In the second book Maisie is infected and Chris must get her to the cure. The final episode sees Chris taking Maisie to the research vessel where they can harvest the cure from her.

The Swiss Family RobinZOM series is a tongue-in-cheek zombie apocalypse based on the original Johann Wyss stories.

He now lives in South Korea.

The next step is to find an illustrator that can bring your vision to life. That is where KENNETH KIT LAMUG comes in.

Between the twisted imaginings of Paul Lewis and the equally, if not more twisted illustrations of Kenneth Kit Lamug, what you end up with is an uproariously funny book that is sure to become an instant Bestseller. I for one will be purchasing several hardcover copies for myself and my friends.

The fact that each page of the book is told in sing-song rhyming prose adds to the overall unreal quality of this hilarious book.

If I had the skills to write a book of this kind, this would be exactly how I would want it to turn out.

What I want to say most, is that I recommend this book as highly as possible. If you do not add it to your must-buy list, then you will be missing out. In fact, I forsee many awards and accolades in this book’s future. Let’s just hope that Paul Lewis receives his rewards before one of his potential apocalyptic scenarios comes to pass.

Dark and twisted. These stories will make you look twice at every child you see. Is he/she just a regular kid? Or, is there a monster hidden behind that seemingly innocent face?

Howard Odentz has crafted a book filled with short stories – one for every letter of the alphabet (26 in all), that will stay with you even long after you finish reading this book.

Starting with “A IS FOR ANDY – WHO WATCHES HIS DAD” and ending with ” Z IS FOR ZINA – WHO SUFFERS STARVATION” every single story is truly creepy and extremely disturbing. On a scale of 1 to 10, this book has a creepiness factor of 13.

What I enjoyed the most about this book and the stories it contains is that it reminds me of the writing of Stephen King in his early writing career – when ge wrote such works as Cujo and Carrie.

Haven’t yet heard of Howard Odentz? Neither had I before receiving this book from Netgalley, but I know I will be hearing more and more about him in the near future. He has published two other books prior to LITTLE KILLERS, and I will be adding both of them to my TBR (To Be Read) list immediately.

I believe that with the proper marketing, this book is destined for the Bestseller list. Everything about this book, including the amazingly macabre cover screams “BUY ME” to those who love horror fiction. I know that as soon as I saw the cover of this book I just had to know what it contained and I was not disappointed.

I rate this collection of truly terrifying tales as 6 out of 5 Stars and I recommend it to everyone who likes horror.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Howard Odentz is an author and a playwright. He is a lifelong resident of the gray area between Western Massachusetts and North Central Connecticut.

His love of that region is evident in his writing as he often incorporates the foothills of the Berkshires and the small towns of the Bay and Nutmeg states into his stories.

“LITTLE KILLERS A to Z, a full-blown alphabet of murderers, psychopaths, monsters and second graders, is his third work with Bell Bridge Books.”

“Previous novels include the horrifically humorous DEAD (A LOT) and the thriller BLOODY BLOODY APPLE.”

Howard’s fascination with the psychological aspects of those who are thrown into thrilling or mysterious circumstances is reflected in his writing.

“I like writing about my dark little corner of the world,” he says. “After all, this is New England. There’s more than enough creepiness here to keep me inspired for years to come.”

4 Stars for WORSE THAN DEATH by Mark Allen – Novella Review

A WORSE THAN DEATH

Title: WORSE THAN DEATH

Subtitle: Day One of the Zombie Apocalypse

Author: Mark Allen

Type of Book: eBook – Novella

Length: 27 pages

Genre: Horror

Release Date: April 2014

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

*** HOLY CRAP***

That was my response to reading the very first sentence in this story. I won’t quote it here (as much as I would love to) because I don’t want to ruin the beginning for potential readers.

** I feel that I need to add a warning to this review that WORSE THAN DEATH is not suitable for all readers. This book contains scenes of graphic violence that will be disturbing to some readers. I suggest that this book is only appropriate for adult readers ages 18 and older.**

Russell Stavin experiences a recurring and absolutely horrific nightmare every night. “Except it wasn’t a dream. It was a memory.”

Russell had been a Marine Scout Sniper who spent two years in Afghanistan. He now lives on a thirty acre property located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York with his wife and young daughter.

When zombies start to rise Russell Stavin is shocked and appalled, but he quickly learns that sometimes the walking dead can be the least of your worries.

His wife and daughter are trapped by an evil man and Russell is determined to save them despite the fact that he must somehow make his way through a horde of zombies to do it.

This book also contains a bonus short story entitled “All The Way”.

I enjoyed WORSE THAN DEATH. It is a fast-paced, gore-filled tale of the first day of the zombie apocalypse.

The author has the gift of hard-hitting writing that grabs your attention and holds it right until the very end.

I have read A LOT of zombie fiction, so it takes quite a bit to impress me. This story did that.

Also, since it is only 27 pages long it is a quick read. You can even read it on your lunch hour.

I love the cover of this novella. I don’t know if it was done on purpose, but the cover brings to my mind posters of B Horror Movies from the 1970s. It has a distinctive classic horror flair that attracted me to it.

The quote I liked the best in this book is: “The zombie went down as if bitch-slapped by the hand of God.”

I rate this novella as 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AIN’T NO GRAVE
The Penance of Leather: Book One

Author: S.A. Softley

Type of Book: eBook

Length: 260 pages

Genre: Fiction – Suspense

Release Date: August 1, 2015

Publisher: Book Baby

ISBN: 9781483557144

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

** Advisory: This book contains mature themed, occasional violence, sexuality and language that may offend some readers. It is intended for audiences ages 16+

You can see the trailer for AIN’T NO GRAVE here:

While on what should have been a short and uneventful flight, a man becomes violently ill. When he stops breathing, CPR is administered but the attempt at resuscitation proves to be futile.

The pilot announces that the plane will be making an emergency landing. It is at this point that everything seems to go wrong; REALLY wrong.

“… only comes in flashes; images; feelings. I remember a piercing scream… I remember the searing heat that spread slowly… After that, everything went dark.”

When consciousness returns to the main character in the story, he realizes he is no longer on the plane. His clean shaven face has mysteriously grown a full beard and hunger gnaws at him. He also realizes he is in a hospital and he seems to be all alone.

Exiting the hospital he discovers that he is in a small Canadian town. Despite its normal outward appearance, the town is completely silent and seems to have been abandoned in the middle of a regular day. “Looking up and down the road, I couldn’t see movement anywhere.”

He needs to figure out what happened and exactly what he is going to do about it.

He quickly realizes that something is really wrong. He seems to be the only person left alive.

S.A. Softley has created a page-turner that is a distinctly unique take on the post-apocalyptic/zombie genre. When I first started reading and the main character woke up in a hospital, I had visions of a complete rip-off of “The Walking Dead.” This, thankfully, could not be farther from the truth.

The main character is unique. As readers learn more about him they begin to empathize with his situation. When he meets up with the old man the story takes an interesting and unexpected twist. In fact, I was taken completely by surprise; which does not happen very often.

I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

AIN’T NO GRAVE is the first book in The Penance of Leather Series and is such a great story that I was surprised to discover that it was the author’s first novel. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

Lovers of post-apocalyptic and zombie novels will fall in love with S.A. Softley’s terrific new series.

Buy a copy of AIN’T NO GRAVE today. You will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend this book and feel that it deserves a 5 Star rating. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

FAVORITE QUOTES:

“As in so many horror movies, the implication of the monster is always more frightening.”

“I silently cursed my family for my stunted emotions. My father had never expressed a feeling other than displeasure in his life as far as I could tell and my mother had wandered through life with blinders on, forcefully unaware that she’d married an asshole.”

“I’d had longer relationships with disposable razors than with most people.”

“My gaze fell in horror to the grotesque and peeling shape that hung between his legs. Few things could bring as much sympathetic dread to a man as the sight of damage to that most valued of organs.”

DEAD CELLS by Kevin Millard – AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

DEAD CELLS

Author: Adam Millard

Type of Book: Audiobook – Unabridged

Narrator: Luke Smith

Length: 5 hours and 52 minutes

Genre: Zombie Fiction

Release Date: March 13, 2015

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review through Audiobook Blast.

THE STORY:

The premise of this novel is a zombie outbreak in a high security prison. Not a bad idea, but limited in scope. Despite that, I decided to give this audiobook a chance.

The main character is a regular guy named Shane. Shane has a wife and young daughter, both of whom he adores. In fact, it is his devotion to his family that eventually lands him in jail.

With the threat of being evicted and despite his diligent job-searching, Shane has been unable to provide financially for his family. In desperation and a misguided attempt to avoid receiving charity, Shane’s pride overrides his common-sense and he does something supremely stupid and very illegal.

Shane receives a three year prison sentence for his actions and the book begins when he only has three months left on his sentence.

Shane is incarcerated in one of the nation’s most notorious prisons and is constantly surrounded by murderers, rapists, gangsters
and pedophiles.

When a new inmate is brought in, carrying with him a deadly virus, Shane realises that his plans, his release, and even his life are at risk.

The sick prisoner is carrying a horrible virus which quickly spreads throughout the prison, infecting both the prisoners and the guards.

“With the virus spreading, turning guards and inmates into flesh-eating zombies, it’s up to a few survivors to figure out how to escape the facility, how to get along.”

I expected more from this audiobook than I received. The author has taken some very large liberties with the story’s logistics. For example: The warden’s office does not have a lock. I find this simply ridiculous. Of course his office door would have a lock. I highly doubt that a high security facility would be lacking in such basic security measures. Not even a simple lock on the warden’s office, and yet other areas require fingerprint scanning to enter. This makes no sense.

I did enjoy listening to the narrator’s voice, however there were some editing errors that distracted me from being able to be fully drawn into the story.

There are at least three instances where the narrator repeats himself. This is both irritating and unpredictable.

Another thing that bothered me about this audiobook was the inconsistency of the time it took for people to turn into zombies. Some inmates took hours or even overnight to change and yet others seemed to change instantly. If the author had offered some explanation for these variations it might have been more believable.

Due to the issues listed above, I rate this audiobook as 3 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐

THE END by Adam M Booth – AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

THE END

Author: Adam M. Booth

Type of Book: Audiobook – Unabridged

Narrator: Shiromi Arserio

Length: 1 hour and 51 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction, Zombie Fiction, Horror

Release Date: August 22, 2014

Publisher: Adam Booth

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, narrator or publisher through AudiobookBlast dot com in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.

This audiobook joins the many other books in the zombie fiction genre. So, why should you choose this audiobook over others in the same genre? That’s simple! Because it is different.

This audiobook is zombie fiction told from the perspective of the zombie rather than from people who are trying to evade the zombies.

THE END is the story of single mother, Zoe. She is overworked, over stressed and overwrought. This is the story of the end of her life as a human and of her life as a zombie.

I did enjoy this audiobook. The narrator, Shiromi Arserio, is a female. She narrates with an English accent. She emotes very well.

The only drawback (in my opinion) was that there was a bit too much introspection for my taste. I would have preferred to learn more about how it felt to be a zombie.

I rate this audiobook as 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

FAVORITE QUOTES:

“I was spoiled meat, roadkill, dog food.”

“When time stands still you only have the images in your mind’s eye.”

“Love will tear us apart they say, but so will tooth and nail…”

“The scream arrives from around the corner, followed by the familiar sound of wet meat hitting the floor; the sound of progress being made.”

ROTTEN BODIES by Steven Jenkins – BOOK REVIEW

ROTTEN BODIES: A Zombie Short Story Collection

Author: Steven Jenkins

Type of Book: eBook

Genre: Horror, Zombie Fiction

Length: 101 pages

Release Date: April 27, 2015

Publisher: Different Cloud Publishing

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* This book is currently available for free on Amazon. However, I do not know how long it will remain being available for free, so I suggest you get this book right away to avoid being disappointed.

I love the creepiness of the cover of this book. Lots of books have zombies on the cover. What sets this cover apart from others is the choice to use the sepia tons. Also if you look closely at the female zombie on the cover you will notice that she does not seem to have the blank, expressionless stare that we often equate with zombies. Even though she is rotting and very scary looking, there is something about her eyes and her expression that make her seem sad or lost. I LOVE this cover.

This collection contains six short stories. They are:

I AM DEAD: “I don’t know who or what killed me – all I know is that I can smell my rotting flesh.”

ROOM 503: Dave and Clare are the parents of five year old Katie. They live in a normal house in a normal neighborhood. News of an infection is all over the television. Up until now all cases of the infected had been far away, but it seems to be coming closer to their hometown.

Dave isn’t worried. “Yeah, but that’s all just paranoia, health and safety gone mad. Remember when it was swine flu?… And that blew over.”

He has the perfect life, but just as so many men before him have done, Dave is having an affair with a young, pretty blonde. He tells his family he is going to a seminar and instead meets up with Jenni at a hotel.

RUN – Sarah is on a deserted country road, but she’s not alone. Something or someone is chasing her and she is running for her life.

BURNING AMBITION – This story has been expanded upon and has been published as a full length bestselling novel called “Burn The Dead.” I have read both the short story and the full length novel and enjoyed both immensely.

THE PIT – Twenty-five year old Howard John Thomas in the coal-mine (better known as the pit). His wife, Thelma hates him working there, but Howard grew up poor and without a father. He wants a better life for his two children. “Not even The Dead rising will stop this Welshma

SIMON DUNN: FORMER ZOMBIE – Simon had been at the mall when a fat woman bit him. Somehow he became a zombie and is now human again. ‘Former Zombie’ is the politically correct term for what he is now.

I love this collection of zombie stories. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this collection, but was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed every single story in the collection.

This author has a gift for writing short stories. This is the second collection of stories by Steven Jenkins that I have read and both collections are fully deserving of a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Type of Book: eBook

Genre: Zombie Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic Fiction, Young Adult Fiction

Length: 242 pages

Ambrose and Stanley are best friends. They also happen to be seventeen years old and have been drafted into the army. The army’s goal is to rid the world of zombies. Teenagers are drafted into the army when they come of age and must spend nine years in the army before being released. The catch is that not many people actually survive for their entire nine year tour.

While on their first mission Stanley and Ambrose end up as the only survivors of a coordinated attack by The Reverend, his forces and his zombies. But, neither one of them escape unharmed. Stanley loses his leg and Ambrose was bitten by a zombie.

Taken to the only functioning hospital still in operation, Stanley recuperates and receives a prosthetic leg. Ambrose is put in quarantine to await his death once he turns into a zombie. But something unusual happens. Ambrose does not turn into a full zombie. He becomes a sort-of half man, half zombie hybrid.

As if a world full of zombies weren’t enough, there is a man who calls himself “The Reverend” who plans to take over the country. The Reverend is pure evil. He plans to infect every living person with the zombie virus. Those who survive the bite are deemed worthy of survival and those who become zombies are said to be blessed to be free of suffering and pain. Basically, this guy is NUTS.

I absolutely loved this book. It is the first book in a trilogy by Ryan Hill. What I liked most about this book is that it is different.

Yes, there is the typical guy trying to save his girl storyline, but that is only part of the plot.

I loved the fact that Ryan Hill has decided to include characters who somehow survive being bitten by zombies. You have to think that if zombies ever actually existed, then at least some people would survive a bite. It stretches reality to think that any virus would have a 100% infection rate.

I loved Ambrose’s character. He starts off as the perfect guy. He is young. He is brave. He is loyal and attractive. What more could anyone ask for in either a friend or a lover? I think I had a little bit of a “book boyfriend crush” on him right from the beginning of the book. When he is bitten by the zombie and becomes a hybrid, he is shunned by his fellow soldiers despite the fact that he is still the same guy they had all loved previously. Ambrose handles their rejection with poise and class. He does not allow himself to be drawn into their juvenile behavior which makes readers like and respect him even more.

Ryan Hill has perfected the art of character building and also does an incredible job of world building.

I have read A LOT of zombie books and for that reason it is rare that I rate any of them higher than 4 out of 5 stars. However, DEAD NEW WORLD deserves it’s 5 star rating and I am now a fan of Ryan Hill.

I give this book as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
