DESCRIPTION:

A novelette from Cat Rambo, author of The Tabat Quartet.

What do you do when someone else’s past forces itself on your own life?

Sorting through the piles left behind by a grandmother who was both a stage magician and a hoarder, Persephone Aim finds a magical artifact from World War II that has shaped her family history.

Faced with her mother’s desperate attempt to take the artifact for herself, Persephone must decide whether to hold onto the past–or use it to reshape her future.

MY REVIEW:

I was unsure what to expect from this novella. I had seen the author’s name before, but I had not yet read any of her work. Reading CARPE GLITTER I was impressed with Cat Rambo’s writing.

The story starts off in one direction and there is some foreshadowing of a surprise to come, but I could in no way have predicted the twists and turns this story.

For a novella of only 62 pages, Cat Rambo has skillfully created fully developed and complex characters. The fact that she has been able to do this for multiple characters is extremely impressive.

I loved the way author brought Persephone to life and I identified with her and her desire to live life on her own terms.

I do not want to ruin this book by giving away any of the plot. But I do want to impress upon people who are thinking about buying this book to go ahead and grab a copy for themselves. Potential readers will not be disappointed.

Family dynamics and dysfunction, a WWII mystery, a grandmother who was a famous magician (and a secret hoarder,) a granddaughter who has spent her life loving both her grandmother and her mother who each hated the other, a strange inheritance, government agents, and much more. This book has everything you could ask for as a reader.

I rate CARPE GLITTER as 5 out of 5 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

DESCRIPTION:

From New York Times bestselling author Jamie Thornton, enter the dark and mysterious worlds of the Doormakers. For fans of Sarah J Maas, Jeff Wheeler, and Rachel E. Carter.

TWO HOURS. ONE INTERSTELLAR DRUG DEAL. BUT HE’S ONLY 13-YEARS-OLD.

One family rule has shaped Esson’s life: never open a door. Esson comes from a family of doormakers—people who unleash otherworldly violence when they open something even as simple as a refrigerator door.

Esson’s family lied to him.
Esson didn’t die when he opened a door.

But if Esson doesn’t track down some magical drugs within the next two hours, the drug dealer he got involved with might just kill him anyway.

MY REVIEW:

Jamie Thornton is one of my favorite authors. Her FEAST OF WEEDS series is a phenomenal read and was what cemented the name JAMIE THORNTON in my mind as a a writer with a rare talent for creating worlds and characters that are not only believable, but also intriguing and entertaining.

In this prequel to her new DOORMAKER SERIES, she has once again crafted a story that pulls the reader in and does not let them go – even after the final page. Once you finish this novella you will immediately want to read the first book in the Doormaker series. DEVIL’S HARVEST is just that good.

Imagine not being able to open a door without mistakenly opening a portal to another world. It might sound glamourous to some people, but this “gift/curse” occurs whenever any type of door is opened, even a refrigerator. Talk about inconvenient!!!

This prequel introduces readers to Esson’s family. Every member of the family is afflicted with the same “gift.” Esson is the eldest son and feels a responsibility to help his parents pay the bills, even though he is only thirteen.

It is the desire to help his family that gets Esson into a situation that is well over his head; he has been stealing drugs through a portal he opened. He is in too deep now and even if he wanted to stop using his gift to steal drugs, the drug dealer he has been supplying will never let him go.

So, will Esson find a way out of his current situation? Or will he resign himself to being a 13 year old drug dealer? Will the cash potential be too much of a lure to keep him from getting out? Or will he try to escape and be killed in the attempt?

You need to read DEVIL’S HARVEST to find out!!!

Once again Jamie Thornton has created a winner. I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. If past books and this prequel are anything to judge by, the rest of the trilogy will also be 5 Star worthy.

I rate DEVIL’S HARVEST as an enthusiastic 5 out of 5 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

DESCRIPTION:

Athlete Beth once ran for glory, now she runs for her own survival.

The undead can run, and run fast. They do not tire, do not slow, do not rest. And they never stop. Ever.

Beth is alone on a quiet country road, a zombie on her tail. With an injured knee and safety more than ten miles away, can she make it? Or will she be the zombie’s victory dinner?

Second place is dead last…

MY REVIEW:

Before the EMP pulse that crippled humanity, and the zombie virus that flourished in its aftermath, Beth was a long-distance runner, and a damned good one.

Ha! Ha! “Damned,” how appropriate for this story.

The story begins with Beth running down a country road. Chasing her is a zombie, a very fast zombie.

Beth’s philosophy had always been: “The second you showed weakness to your opponent was the moment you were doomed.” She is determined to outrun the zombie, but is hampered by an injured knee.

This race has dire consequences if she loses.

Even though this is only a short story, I enjoyed it very much. The ending will surprise most readers which I think is awesome.

I rate this story as 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Perrin Briar was born in Huntingdon, in the UK. He has worked as a bookie, salesman, factory hand and stock counter. He eventually got into TV and worked on various shows in the production and development departments. He currently teaches English in South Korea.

The Blood Memory books involve a group surviving at sea in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world. The first book follows Jordan Grant, who wakes up knowing nothing about the virus or the world as it now is. During the first season Jordan unlocks key memories in his past that have a dramatic effect on the world now.

The Z-Minus Trilogy follows Chris and Maisie, a father and daughter with a bad relationship. Unlike other zombie books, in this series the virus takes eight hours to spread throughout the host’s body. In the first book Chris uses this time to get his daughter somewhere safe. In the second book Maisie is infected and Chris must get her to the cure. The final episode sees Chris taking Maisie to the research vessel where they can harvest the cure from her.

The Swiss Family RobinZOM series is a tongue-in-cheek zombie apocalypse based on the original Johann Wyss stories.

He now lives in South Korea.

PRETTY MARYS ALL IN A ROW: A Novella of Ghosts by GWENDOLYN KISTE will challenge everything you thought you knew about ghosts. 4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Title: PRETTY MARYS ALL IN A ROW

Author: GWENDOLYN KISTE

Genre: URBAN FANTASY, ADULT FICTION

Length: 94 PAGES

Publisher: BROKEN EYE BOOKS

Release Date: NOVEMBER 28, 2017

Rating: 4 OUT OF 5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐

PRETTY MARYS ALL IN A ROW: A Novella of Ghosts

New weird urban fantasy novella, Pretty Marys All in a Row by Gwendolyn Kiste, follows the (after)lives and times of five ghosts and their haunts, combining contemporary fairy tale and urban legend in a story that shows that being dead isn’t always a bed of roses.

Releases November 28, 2017, from Broken Eye Books.

Mary, Mary: Always hitchhiking the same lonely highway, she calls herself Rhee, but everyone else knows her as Resurrection Mary. And when she’s transported home each night to the same decrepit, nowhere mansion, she’s always got her sisters.

Call her name three times, and Bloody Mary appears. In the poisoned garden, Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary. Downstairs, Mary Mack, forever building her own coffin. And brooding with her horse skull, the restless Mari Lwyd.

They are the Marys, embodiments of urban legend and what goes bump in the night, every child’s nightmare. But as the walls between their realities start to crack, the shadows threaten oblivion. To save herself and her sisters, Rhee must unravel who the Marys are before the darkness claims them.

MY REVIEW:

In a dilapidated country house with “… trim around the windows the shade of old urine, the faded stonework as dejected as first love” resides a very unusual family.”

“We’re a house brimming with Mary’s, the mortar bursting at the seams with urban legends and deranged nursery rhymes. We don’t know how we got here, and we don’t know how to leave.”

Thrust together in an afterlife that not a single one of them asked for, are five women, all named Mary.

Each Mary is a ghost and each has their own mystique. For example, most readers have heard of the legend of Bloody Mary and that if you look into a mirror and say “BLOODY MARY” three times, she will appear; dripping blood.

Each night the Marys separate and head out to haunt people in the style required by their respective legends.

The Marys return home after haunting each night, they gather together around the dining room table and share the night’s adventures, just like families everywhere sit together at their kitchen table for supper every night.

The Marys are reasonably happy – as happy as five dead women can be, but their happiness won’t last much longer. Something is coming for them and unless they find a way to fight it, they are doomed to an existence where no one can see or hear them – a fate much worse than death.

The storyline is spectacular. Although this novella is only 94 pages long, or perhaps because of its length, no unnecessary scenes are included. This means the action is non-stop and readers will not want to put this book down – they will feel compelled to find out what happens next.

The author has done a superior job of character development and it becomes impossible for the reader to feel negatively toward the Marys. In fact, they become sympathetic characters. Readers will be rooting for the Marys. It may seem strange to empathize with a ghost, but you will understand when you read this book.

Those who enjoy tales of ghosts and of unrequited love will enjoy this book.

I rate PRETTY MARYS ALL IN A ROW as 5 out of 5 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

QUOTES:

“… he looks real now. Real and wicked as heartache.”

“… leans in close, and I taste his breath, all jagged ice and coffin dirt and winters that never end.”

**Thank you to Broken Eye Books for providing me with a free copy of this novella.**

COMMENTS FROM THE AUTHOR:

“Folklore and fairy tales have always been a huge inspiration for me, both for their whimsy and their remarkably dark underpinnings. As a horror writer, there’s nothing as familiar and unsettling as many of the original fairy tales most of us grew up reading.”

“In that vein, Pretty Marys All in a Row started from a conversation I had with my husband, who is a fellow devotee of folklore. He and I went through all the Marys who appear in fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and other legends. It’s astounding when you list them all, how often the name appears in different incarnations (ditto for the Jacks, though he’ll have to wait for another story).

“That conversation led me to a series of questions that immediately unnerved me. What if these Marys know they’re storybook legends—and what if they want no part of it? If the choice to be in our folklore was never theirs to make, then what if we’re perpetuating their torment by continually retelling these tales? And if the Marys, like Resurrection Mary and Bloody Mary in particular, are the embodiment of nightmares, then what kind of powerful force controls the nightmares? That last question terrified me most of all—the notion of something else, something unknown to them, controlling the Marys—and from there, Pretty Marys All in a Row was born.”

“Ultimately, the story became one about loss and identity and finding yourself and your home and family, even when all other choices have been ripped away from you. To have Pretty Marys join the incredible roster of releases at Broken Eye Books is beyond thrilling and humbling. This is a journey that’s been a wonderful one to take as a writer, and I hope that readers feel the same way.”

THE MURDERS OF MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE by Tade Thompson will be available on October 3rd and will scare the heck out of you.

        🌟🌟🌟🌟 = 4 STARS

Title: THE MURDERS OF MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE

Author: TADE THOMPSON

Genre: FICTION, HORROR

Length: 128 PAGES

Publisher: TOR BOOKS

Received From: NETGALLEY

Release Date: OCTOBER 3, 2017

ISBN: 978-0-7653-9713-3 (PAPERBACK)

ISBN: 978-0-7653-9712-6 (EBOOK)

Price: $1.99 USD – EBOOK

Rating: 4 OUT OF 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

The rule is simple: don’t bleed.

For as long as Molly Southbourne can remember, she’s been watching herself die. Whenever she bleeds, another molly is born, identical to her in every way—and intent on her destruction.

Molly knows every way to kill herself, but she also knows that as long as she survives she’ll be hunted. No matter how well she follows the rules, eventually the mollys will find her. Can Molly find a way to stop the tide of blood, or will she meet her end at the hand of a girl who looks just like her?

MY REVIEW:

Despite only consisting of 128 pages, and officially being considered a “novella” rather than a “novel,” THE MURDERS OF MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE does not lack readability. Yes, it is a quick read, but that is due to the fact that once begun, it is nearly impossible to put down.

The concept of the “Doppelganger” is not new, even so, author Tade Thompson has taken the concept to places no one ever has before.

This story is all about Molly.

Molly may look normal, but she suffers from a unique genetic quirk, one that makes her the only person alive with her bizarre condition.

It’s all about the blood.

Every time Molly bleeds, another copy of herself grows from that blood and a new molly is created – a perfect physical copy of Molly at the moment in time when her blood was shed.

The problem occurs because the new molly may start out seemingly normal, but inevitably, the new copy turns on the original and attempts to murder her.

Imagine knowing that at least once a month (thanks to her gender,) a new molly will come to life and that you have no choice but to commit murder in order to preserve your own life.

What would that do to your pysche? Could you ever hope to lead a normal life?

You will need to read this novella to find out if Molly ever figures out a way to control her disorder or if she ends up dead at the hands of one of the mollys.

If you enjoy reading books where the storyline begins with a high degree of suspense which continues to build until it is at a frenzy, then THE MURDERS OF MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE is the perfect book for you.

The best thing about this book is the totally unexpected and explosive ending which also opens up the potential for a sequel. Personally, I hope Tade Thompson does write an additional book based on this one. I give THE MURDERS OF MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE a rating of 4 out of 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

An exciting announcement was just made – THE MURDERS  MOLLY SOUTHBOURNE is being made into a full-length feature film. To read more about the upcoming film’s details, click HERE.

THE ROOM IN GRANDMA’S HOUSE

* I received this short story free from Amazon

Tiffany Warren’s Great-Great Grandmother Edna is the oldest living person in the state of North Carolina at 116 years old.

Since Edna has been placed in hospice care, the family has sent the unemployed Tiffany to complete the task of cleaning up her great-grandmother’s house.

What she discovers inside the house changes her forever.

I thought I had a good idea of how this book would go, but I was pleasantly surprised with the story. I was also pleasantly surprised by it’s length.

We learn quite a bit about Tiffany’s Grandma Edna’s past. And with her being 116 years old, there is a lot of history.

I really enjoyed this story and would be happy to recommend it to others.

Reality is broken…

For Marlon Smith the afterlife is a beach. The computer-generated world his consciousness inhabits provides for his every need. But flaws begin to appear in the fabric of his reality. Flaws that shouldn’t be possible are showing up. And he seems to be the only one who sees them.

Marlon must move quickly, before his actions are spotted by the program and his memories of the flaws are edited out.

As he learns more about how the afterlife functions, he learns some interesting facts about his ties to the afterlife.

Marlon must diagnose and fix the problems before the lives of billions of people are snuffed out.

This novella may only be fifty-two pages long, but the author does an amazing job of world-building.

The concept of the afterlife being a virtual reality that after death one can “live” forever in any setting is an interesting one. Who wouldn’t want to know that once they die they are not simply gone? Who wouldn’t be thrilled to know that when their loved ones also died, that they would be able to see them again?

But, as with anything else, there are unexpected and unintended consequences to creating the afterlife.

This story is a quick read that grabs and keeps the reader’s attention from start to finish.

I rate this novella as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Listeners were introduced to Greco in CROSSFIRE – Book One of the series. Greco is Mirissa’s protector and her trainer.

Not much is revealed about his background in the first book, but there are hints given that his childhood was anything but idyllic.

In fact, his mother treated him like an unwanted stray dog that she was stuck with. Her drinking only escalated the abuse and Greco has not seen or spoken to her in a very long time.

He is very private. He does not often tell people about the abuse he suffered at the hands if his mother. So, when word comes that Greco’s mother has been abducted, he is given the job of tracking her down.

“Ruthless mercenaries, inept crooks, and deeply buried secrets abound while Greco and Mirissa push their relationship to the brink in their search for answers.”

“In this novella sequel to Crossfire, the mysteries of Greco’s past are revealed, and his biggest mistake threatens to destroy his future.”

This audiobook is very well written and performed. I am glad that the author chose to use a male narrator to tell Greco’s story. I do not think it would have had the same impact if it was narrated by a woman.

David Dietz has the ability to pull his listeners into the story and to ensure that they keep listening. His pacing is perfect and his suspense building skills are second to none. I rate the narration as 5 out of 5 stars.

While the first book focused mostly on Mirissa and on building the plot, this book was much more personal. It does have a terrific mystery that must be solved, but it is the character development and the emotional aspects that make this audiobook a five star listening experience.

I rate this audiobook as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

FALLING FOR Q46F

Author: Jason Werbeloff

Type of Book: eBook

Genre: Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic, Science Fiction, Zombie Fiction, Comedy

Length: 17 pages

Release Date: April 13, 2015

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

FALLING FOR Q46F is a short novella.

Description from Goodreads:

In a world ravaged by undead humans, Q46F lives out its days trapped alone in a bunker. Each day since Master died is the same: feed the bunker wall, sing to the dining table in F major, and put the fridge to sleep.

But after waiting 27.03 years, obsessive compulsive Q46F hears a signal. A signal from another. Another Q46F.

Falling for Q46F is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy short that will melt even a zombie-proof titanium heart.

My Review:

I was hesitant to list “Zombie Fiction” as one of the categories for this novella. The reason for this is that yes, there are zombies in this story, but they are definitely not the focus of the plot. In fact, there are almost background rather than a major plot point.

Q46F is an android. This should mean that the reader will feel little to no empathy for it. Somehow though, this is not the case. Even though the entire story only lasts 17 pages, it reads like a novella rather than a short story.

Jason Werbeloff has a gift for providing a wealth of information with few words. He also skillfully manipulates the reader’s emotions. Who could possibly feel sorry for an android? They are not alive therefore we shouldn’t really care what happens to them, yet in this story, we do.

I also loved the details that were included regarding the construction and maintenance of the bunker, it was exceptionally clever.

I also must comment on the gorgeous cover art. It is that art that first drew my attention to this story.

I rate this novella as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This novella is a follow-up to the first book in THE WAITING Series.

* WARNING* This novella will not make much sense if readers have not read THE WAITING first. To understand exactly what is happening with each of the characters and how they came to this point in their lives is essential to truly appreciate the storyline.

THE WAITING is complex and has a complicated plot with a large cast of characters.

At the end of THE WAITING Arianne has found her oldest son shot in the entrance to her home. He dies en route to the hospital and the ambulance is involved in an accident torching the van along with it’s occupants.

Arianne may have fought with Nash, even despised him at times, but he was her son and she loved him deeply and unconditionally.

Andrew and Arianne had just decided to give their damaged 26 year marriage a chance. Andrew had promised to try to be a better husband and father.

Gregory found out that his ex-girlfriend, Tiffany was pregnant with his child. (Readers know she isn’t really pregnant) He was in love with Arianne and she loved him but it was Tiffany’s pregnancy and Arianne’s belief in familial duty that prompted her to return to Andrew rather than to seek happiness with Gregory. She loved him enough to let him go so that he would have a chance at his own family and happiness. Gregory does not love Tiffany but he recognizes that Nash’s death has changed everything.

Arianne is going to be arrested for the murder of her son and both Andrew and Gregory know that she did not kill him, but they need to discover who is actually responsible.

Millie was in love with Nash even though he was her ex-husband’s son. She is racked with guilt and remorse. No one knows that it was her plan to have Nash’s brother Reece killed that went horribly wrong and instead ended in the death of her beloved.

All of this and a illegal organ transplant ring that involves multiple hospitals and even multiple states. This story has it all.

You can see what I mean when I say the plot is complicated and the cast of characters large and complex and even with all the facts I just listed, I have left out quite a few details and even failed to mention several key characters.

This series is a terrific read. The authors have managed to create an amazing story that will keep you reading long into the night.

The convoluted relationships may seem unrealistic, but once you read the books you will begin to understand exactly how it is that they came about. The authors have done an incredible job of delving into people’s psyches and detailing what makes them tick.

This novella is a terrific addition to the series and I am excited to read Book Two.

I rate this novella as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

NOTE: This book is intended for mature readers due to adult scenes, situations and language.
