TERROR OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER by PERRIN BRIAR is FREE on Amazon right now & well worth reading

Length: 60 PAGES

Type of Book: EBOOK

Release Date: JANUARY 4, 2018

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Athlete Beth once ran for glory, now she runs for her own survival.

The undead can run, and run fast. They do not tire, do not slow, do not rest. And they never stop. Ever.

Beth is alone on a quiet country road, a zombie on her tail. With an injured knee and safety more than ten miles away, can she make it? Or will she be the zombie’s victory dinner?

Second place is dead last…

Before the EMP pulse that crippled humanity, and the zombie virus that flourished in its aftermath, Beth was a long-distance runner, and a damned good one.

Ha! Ha! “Damned,” how appropriate for this story.

The story begins with Beth running down a country road. Chasing her is a zombie, a very fast zombie.

Beth’s philosophy had always been: “The second you showed weakness to your opponent was the moment you were doomed.” She is determined to outrun the zombie, but is hampered by an injured knee.

This race has dire consequences if she loses.

Even though this is only a short story, I enjoyed it very much. The ending will surprise most readers which I think is awesome.

I rate this story as 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Perrin Briar was born in Huntingdon, in the UK. He has worked as a bookie, salesman, factory hand and stock counter. He eventually got into TV and worked on various shows in the production and development departments. He currently teaches English in South Korea.

The Blood Memory books involve a group surviving at sea in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world. The first book follows Jordan Grant, who wakes up knowing nothing about the virus or the world as it now is. During the first season Jordan unlocks key memories in his past that have a dramatic effect on the world now.

The Z-Minus Trilogy follows Chris and Maisie, a father and daughter with a bad relationship. Unlike other zombie books, in this series the virus takes eight hours to spread throughout the host’s body. In the first book Chris uses this time to get his daughter somewhere safe. In the second book Maisie is infected and Chris must get her to the cure. The final episode sees Chris taking Maisie to the research vessel where they can harvest the cure from her.

The Swiss Family RobinZOM series is a tongue-in-cheek zombie apocalypse based on the original Johann Wyss stories.

He now lives in South Korea.

Author: Tony Bowman

Type of Book: Autographed Softcover

Genre: Short Stories, Horror

Length: 111 pages

Release Date: April 2014

ISBN: 9781499230794

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free softcover copy of “Morgue Dreams and Curiouser Things’ from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a collection of short horror fiction stories. Some of the stories were published previously in various magazines, but this is the first time they have been published as a collection.

It always amazes me how much a talented writer can pack into just a few pages of text. The seventeen stories in this collection are all exceptionally well written and even though most of them are not more than a couple pages long, somehow the author is able to suck the reader into the story.

Stories such as “Everybody’s Doing It” show the dangers of modern technology as well as the vanity and folly of people in today’s superficial world and the lengths people will go to despite the potential cost to themselves.

The story “CRITICISM” begins with: “I hate stories about vampires. No, that’s not quite strong enough. I loathe and despise stories about vampires. God knows that the bookshelves are packed full of the damnable things these days, and I loathe and despise every single one.” I love this beginning. Even though the author gives away some of the plot by making this statement, I was drawn into the story. It takes talent to say so much, with such few words and talent is something that author Tony Bowman has in abundance.

Morlocks, vampires, witches, private investigators, sexy neighbors, and much more can be found in this superbly written collection of horror themed short stories.

“These are very special low fat brownies I made for the local Weight Watchers group, Ray. Each little square has over eight thousand calories and is just as addictive as a syringe full of heroin…”

With lines like the one above, readers will enjoy the author’s delightfully wicked sense of humor that goes hand-in-hand with his diabolical mind.

I rate this collection as 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and I highly recommend buying this book.

This is my first experience with reading anything by author, Tony Bowman, but after devouring these stories I can assure you that I will be looking to read more works by this author.

In fact, I am about to start reading VALKYRIE: THE ROAD which is a “Novel of Post-Apocalyptic Horror” which is also written by Tony Bowman.

“Think about it, I just downed a gallon and a half of your pal’s blood – it’s gotta go somewhere. I don’t have a wooden leg.”

“I used the lid of a garbage can to cut off her head.”

“You wouldn’t believe how many body parts I dispose of on a daily basis. Fingers, eyes… hell, in lawn mowing season I must incinerate thirty toes a day.”

“Hilda had never liked cell phones. Leashes and leeches she would say: they tied you down and sucked away your money. What she wouldn’t have given for one of the little plastic boxes now.”

Tony Bowman is the author of four full-length novels as well as many short stories. His short story collection entitled “Morgue Dreams and Curiouser Things” is an amazingly well written collection of seventeen short horror stories.

Tony currently lives in North Carolina with his wife, Laurie, his daughter, Sara and a hundred pound Catahoula Leopard dog.

Author: D.M. Raver

Type of Book: Audiobook – Unabridged

Narrator: D, Gaunt

Length: 36 minutes

Genre: Fantasy & Science Fiction

Release Date: July 10, 2015

Publisher: Danielle Raver

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this audiobook from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

Since listening to the entire audiobook only took 36 minutes to complete, I was not expecting a story with a lot of depth. However, I should know by now that judging a book (or audiobook, in this case) by it’s cover or it’s length is never a good idea.

I absolutely loved this story.

It is amazing how little it takes to sell away your soul. Ten dollars and 50 cents. That’s all it took to purchase some graphics and bold fonts and 200 neon fliers from the copy store. Each invites the regulars and tourists alike to the community stage to the east of the market. There, at sundown, they are promised a show beyond their imagination.
I hand out the fliers to passersby on the street. Da would be furious. All his efforts to hide me all these years, I will destroy in one afternoon.

What would you be willing to do to protect your only child?

What anguish and pain would you be willing to go through to keep that child away from harm?

What would you be willing to do to save your child’s life?

This audiobook takes a mere 36 minutes to listen to, but I guarantee you will still be thinking about it long after those 36 minutes have passed.

I do not want to ruin the story for potential listeners, so I will keep this review short. BUT, I also want to mention that the description does not do this audiobook justice.

THIS IS A MUST LISTEN. If listening to this audiobook does not cause the listener to want to talk about it with others, I would be surprised. One topic could be Quality vs. Quantity of life.

The narration is excellent. D. Gaunt was the perfect choice to narrate this book. Her tone of voice, pacing and her ability to convey emotion create a wonderful listening experience.

I heartily rate this audiobook as 5 out of 5 stars.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lenny lives with his father and Grandmother. His grandmother had moved in after Lenny’s mother died.

Lenny’s grandma has a magic cup and this is the story of that cup. Because this is such a short audiobook I don’t want to give any of the story away.

This book is geared towards children from the ages of 8 and 10 years old. It is also a story with a moral. Grandma’s magic cup has the ability to do many things, including healing the sick or injured. Grandma must teach Ned to use the cup only for helping others and never to harm.

The narrator does a good job of telling the story. It feels like someone reading the story to a child while the child is in bed getting ready to sleep for the night. I think both kids and adults alike will enjoy this short audiobook.

I rate it as 5 out of 5 stars.

The only complaint I have is the bland cover.

ANGEL SONGS: Short Stories and Poems

Author: Dona Watson

Narrator: Dora Gaunt

Length: 3 hours, 3 minutes

Release Date: June 23, 2015

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This is a collection of twenty Christmas themed short stories and poems.

Moving from town to town can make it hard for young children to make friends. But a school Christmas party hosted by her Mom might change all that.

A mall filled with Christmas shoppers. A lost child. A mysterious soldier who watches over the child.

The poems and stories that are part of this audiobook all have a Christmas theme and a theme of family, forgiveness, home and hearth.

The narrator does a wonderful job of telling each story. The only complaint I have about this audiobook is the sound quality. It isn’t horrible, but at times it sounds like the narrator is located in an enclosed space – not quite an echo, but similar.

I rate this audiobook as 4 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dona Watson grew up with a book in one hand, dreaming about imaginary worlds of mystery and adventure. In high school, she found an old copy of Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff in a used bookstore, fell in love with fantasy fiction and never looked back.

She earned a Bachelor’s in English from Vanguard University and now works fulltime as a writer and editor. Her stories can be found online and in print, including Angel Songs, 20 Christmas Short Stories and Poems, plus Recipes. Look for her award-winning fantasy novel The Lightstone of Perlan, soon to be published, as well as short stories online, in ebook format, and in print.

With an unbridled love for reading and writing fiction, Dona lives surrounded by way too many books in Southern California with a wonderful husband, son and daughter, and a precocious little dog.

TREATING HYSTERIA: An Erotic Short Story

Author: Jamie Klaire

Length: 18 pages

Genre: Erotica, Historical Fiction

Release Date: June 7, 2014

Publisher: Alter Ego Publishing

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

** This story contains sexual situations and is not suitable for anyone under the age of eighteen.**

In the 1900s the vibrator was created to help doctors treat women who were diagnosed with “hysteria”.

Doctors would give their female hysteria patients an orgasm and suddenly the women were cured.

This short story is the author’s version of what one of these doctor visits would have been like.

There are a few grammatical errors in this story, but it is what it is … a work of historical erotic fiction.

If a doctor in today’s society treated a woman with “hysteria” by stimulating her sexually by hand, he would be thrown out of the medical profession and charged with sexual misconduct. However, in the 1900s this was actually thought to be a valid medical treatment. It makes you wonder…

I rate this as 4 out of 5 stars.⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is how the author describes herself: “I’m a classy, prim and proper married mother on the outside, and on the inside (and in my younger years) I’m kicked back in tight jeans and a cinched corset, playing poker with one hand and holding a whiskey in the other. A mouth only a sailor would love, a two-step that just won’t quit, and a raunchy imagination to top it all off.”

SPINE by Steven Jenkins – BOOK REVIEW

SPINE: A Collection of Twisted Tales

Author: Steven Jenkins

Type of Book: eBook

Length: 104 pages

Genre: Horror, Short Stories

Release Date: April 7, 2015

Publisher: Different Cloud Publishing

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is currently being offered for FREE by visiting the author’s webpage.

The cover of this book is especially creepy. It is the perfect cover for an anthology of short horror stories.

“This collection of eight stories go beyond the realm of terror to an entirely different kind of creepiness.”

THE OUR-SIDE – A scientist finally provides definitive proof of the existence of ghosts. He invents a device that holds a spirit in place long enough to weaken it.

CRAWL SPACE – Fourteen year old Henry can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep. He hears scratching, rustling and scraping within the walls of his attic bedroom in their new (old) house.

ALL EYES ON ME – Mark is visiting his psychiatrist – Doctor Caswell. Mark tells him that everyone is staring at him everywhere he goes. He says that even animals act differently around him. At first he thought he was just being paranoid, now he’s not so sure.

Standing on a rusty old bridge into the dark water below, a woman sees a demon beside her encouraging her to jump. “It is now standing on the ledge next to me, glaring, waiting for me to make the giant leap. The leap that I never thought I could make. But here I am, about to leave the man I love, about to leave my friends, my family, job, because of some figment of my imagination.”

THE DEVIL’S APPRENTICE – After serving as the Devil’s Apprentice in Hell for three thousand years he is cast out of Hell. What will he do now?

WATCH OVER ME – Colin Turner is dying. Coughing up blood and being stuck in a hospital bed is starting to seriously annoy him.

THE HOME – Nancy works the night shift at a nursing home, but lack of sleep is getting to her. She starts to see the ghost of a dead resident. Is it real? Or is she hallucinating?

ONE PILL FOR PERFECT VISION – He had avoided drugs in college and even afterward. “Then After-Eye came along. And everything changed.” This drug was legal, so why not try it? This is one drug that I hope never comes to be a reality.

This is one of the best horror short story collections that I have ever come across. Usually I like only a couple of stories in any collection, but this collection was the exception. I can honestly say that I enjoyed every story in SPINE. It is for that reason that I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This short story was inspired by the New Agenda book series which is one of my favorite series. If you have not had the pleasure of reading ‘The City Center,’ ‘The New Agenda,’ or ‘The Mainframe’ I suggest you add these books to your MUST READ list immediately. You will not be disappointed.

Nothing like an apocalypse to put your life in perspective.

Suzanne was using alcohol to get through her days. After an ultimatum from her husband she gave up her wine and their marriage improved dramatically.

After losing their home in the Repatterning a pregnant Suzanne and her husband move into the Austin Library where they hope to live in relative safety.

This short story proves that there is not always a happy ending for all those who have been displaced by the Repatterning. It also shines a light on just what a person will do to ensure their own survival.

I loved the characters in this story.

I only discovered Simone Pond’s books this past year and she has quickly become one of my all-time favorite authors.

Her characters are vivid and believable. Whether she is writing full-length novels or short stories, she has the ability to draw the reader into her world. This is an especially difficult feat in a short story, but Simone Pond makes it seem easy.

FALLING FOR Q46F by Jason Werbeloff – BOOK REVIEW

Author: Jason Werbeloff

Type of Book: eBook

Genre: Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic, Science Fiction, Zombie Fiction, Comedy

Length: 17 pages

Release Date: April 13, 2015

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

* I downloaded this short story for free on http://www.amazon.com

FALLING FOR Q46F is a short novella.

Description from Goodreads:

In a world ravaged by undead humans, Q46F lives out its days trapped alone in a bunker. Each day since Master died is the same: feed the bunker wall, sing to the dining table in F major, and put the fridge to sleep.

But after waiting 27.03 years, obsessive compulsive Q46F hears a signal. A signal from another. Another Q46F.

Falling for Q46F is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy short that will melt even a zombie-proof titanium heart.

My Review:

I was hesitant to list “Zombie Fiction” as one of the categories for this novella. The reason for this is that yes, there are zombies in this story, but they are definitely not the focus of the plot. In fact, there are almost background rather than a major plot point.

Q46F is an android. This should mean that the reader will feel little to no empathy for it. Somehow though, this is not the case. Even though the entire story only lasts 17 pages, it reads like a novella rather than a short story.

Jason Werbeloff has a gift for providing a wealth of information with few words. He also skillfully manipulates the reader’s emotions. Who could possibly feel sorry for an android? They are not alive therefore we shouldn’t really care what happens to them, yet in this story, we do.

I also loved the details that were included regarding the construction and maintenance of the bunker, it was exceptionally clever.

I also must comment on the gorgeous cover art. It is that art that first drew my attention to this story.

I rate this novella as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
