Laura Dunagan, was born in the gold prospecting days of rustic Alaska in the early 1900’s. When Laura was 14 years old, her father was trapped under a mud slide while prospecting in a nearby river and died. Laura was forced to move to Chicago in the care of her rich Uncle Joe. Laura hated Uncle Joe because he forced her to leave the river, but also because he had left the family prospecting business to move to Chicago years before she was born.
Laura discovers that Uncle Joe made his fortune selling insurance and was the owner of the largest insurance company in Illinois. While wondering through the mansion one day, she found Uncle’s Joe personal den. In it, she discovered an entire new life that would lead her to heights that she would never had realized panning for gold in Alaska. Uncle Joe used the 6 gold prospecting rules for safety to prospect new clients for his insurance company and in doing so, discovered the secrets to wealth in selling.

When I think about books on the subject of business and how to generate leads, I usually think of dry, textbook-like tomes that will put you to sleep faster than if you had guzzled a giant bottle of NyQuil. This book takes those expectations and completely and irrevocably shatters them.
This book is a mix of fiction non-fiction and is completely historically accurate. Rather than just list the best ways to generate sales leads, the author has embedded the information inside an utterly fascinating historical tale of resilience and determination.
The story immediately grabs the reader’s attention. Who can resist a true tale of success back in the era of the gold-rush when anyone willing to work hard could strike it rich at any moment.
Just about everyone can relate to Laura’s grief over the death of her father and her feelings of displacement and loneliness when she leaves her home in the wilds of Alaska to live in big city Chicago.
Relating to the characters forces the reader to become invested in the story. When a reader becomes invested in a story it is more likely that he or she will remember the contents of that story.
The fact that this book teaches readers the secrets to becoming successful at prospecting in a business sense is almost secondary to the story. The story itself is a great read.
I think Ken Dunn’s idea to write a sales book concealed within a fictitious framework was a stroke of genius. Basically … It works. The “secrets” he wanted to impart are easy to remember since they have been related through the struggles of the lead character in the story.
I am also impressed with the amount of historically accurate details that are contained within this story. In my view this is what takes this tale from good to great and this outweighs the negative feelings I had when I learned that Laura had a rich, influential Uncle who helped her on her journey to success. If this was purely a fiction book, I would have called the author out on the inclusion of the rich Uncle, but readers need to remember that this is a book about how to become a great sales person, not a book written purely for entertainment.
With that said, I have decided that this is one of the best sales tutorial books I have ever read. For that reason, I am rating THE GREATEST PROSPECTOR IN THE WORLD as 5 out of 5 stars.

My Views on the Book’s Cover:
I think the front cover is as close to perfection as is humanly possible. I love the sepia tones which match the historical content of the story. I love the picture of the old-time prospector and the girl looking out over her beloved Alaska wilderness. It is also very clever that the reflection in the lake is of a modern city. Bravo to the cover designer.
The only thing I did not like was that the writing on the back cover is so small. This makes it difficult to read. Also, the back cover is just too cluttered. I agree that it should include some quotes of praise, but it is just too much.
